Buy a Bottle, Save a Bee: California Chardonnay and Pinot Noir — A Portion of Proceeds to be Donated to Bee Conservancy Organizations

GEYSERVILLE, CA (August 18, 2017) With the slogan Buy a Bottle, Save A Bee, the sustainability team of The Family Coppola – which includes the Francis Ford Coppola Winery and the Virginia Dare Winery – proudly announces the debut of Bee’s Box Wines. The release of Bee’s Box Chardonnay 2016 and Bee’s Box Pinot Noir 2016 will take place on National Honeybee Day, Saturday, August 19, at the Virginia Dare Winery in Geyserville, with festivities, tastings, and informative sessions to continue through Sunday, August 20.

The Bee’s Box initiative is a branch of the long-term sustainability aims of The Family Coppola wines, one that quickly grew into an employee-driven program of beekeeping that’s been fueled by grave concern for diminishing bee populations as well as the wineries’ natural capacity to take action. Several key employees are spearheading the new Bee’s Box project: Courtney Prose is responsible for maintaining the hives and provides direction to other employees tending the bees on a weekly basis, while Lise Asimont tabulates the overall impact on the estate.

“The bees on our property are more than just hives,” says Asimont. “They’re our effort to promote biodiversity in our vineyards. When agriculture has greater biodiversity, the entire ecosystem benefits. It’s a cornerstone of being sustainable.”

Ten percent of the proceeds from the sale of Bee’s Box Wines is to be donated to organizations whose mission is to promote pollinator health through conservation, education, and research. One such organization is the San Francisco-based Pollinator Partnership and their Bee Friendly Farming Center through which farmers and growers can certify themselves by following prescribed guidelines, and subsequently identify themselves with the BFF logo of a black bee on a green background.
