Unique Dining Destination Opens to Public on November 5th with Special Community Open House Taking Place on Friday, November 4th

Virginia DareGEYSERVILLE, Calif. (October 24, 2016)Today Francis Coppola announced the name and location of his newest culinary destination. Located at Virginia Dare Winery in Sonoma County, Werowocomoco (pronounced: Wero-wo-como-ko) will open to the public on Saturday, November 5th. Named after the impressive 17th century Algonquin settlement, Werowocomoco follows in the footsteps of Virginia Dare Winery, whose heritage is steeped in American native myth and early American winemaking.

“Virginia Dare Winery highlights the genesis of American winemaking, so it makes sense that our new restaurant would celebrate our country’s indigenous foods,” said Francis Ford Coppola. “With Werowocomoco, my goal is to present a menu inspired by the culinary traditions of the earliest inhabitants of North America.”

The unique fare will focus on native ingredients with a zestful accent. Culinary designs such as bison ribs with a berry barbecue sauce, hearty river-harvested wild rice with cranberries, and fry bread tacos with many fillings are a few of the highly anticipated items. With a capacity of 66 interior seats and extended al fresco patio dining, Werowocomoco offers northern Sonoma County a new culinary outpost – and a conversation starter in the name (Wero-wo-como-ko).  “Try it, it’s fun to say,” says Coppola. To show gratitude to the local community, Coppola is inviting residents of Geyserville to enjoy a private preview of Werowocomoco with complimentary food on Friday evening, November 4th. Geyserville residents can expect to receive this special invitation via mail the week prior to opening.

Werowocomoco denotes a significant part of history and references a powerful Native American settlement, located along the York River in Virginia. Often called the original “capital” city of Virginia, Werowocomoco, meaning “place of leadership,” was the center of the Powhatan Confederacy in the early 17th century under the paramount chief Powhatan, an Algonquian political and spiritual leader. Powhatan oversaw several tribes, including the Pamunkey in the areas of what is now present-day Richmond. Today, the highly respected Pamunkey Indian Tribe continues to have a presence in the area. With a personal blessing from the Pamunkey chief, Mr. Coppola has been entrusted to borrow the Native American name Werowocomoco and honor the cultural heritage of the Pamunkey people and their vibrant history.

ABOUT VIRGINIA DARE WINERY

Virginia Dare Winery, American wines since 1835, pays tribute to America’s winegrowing heritage. The existence of the 400-year-old scuppernong “Mother Vine,” a variety of muscadine, growing on Roanoke Island, North Carolina is intertwined with the story of one of the first English settlements in the New World, which later mysteriously disappeared without a trace, leaving nothing but a spellbinding story of mythical and mysterious characters – each of which grace the labels of our wines. Crafted with grapes from the finest viticulture regions in California, our wines are rich with characteristics befitting an American legend: Pure. Natural. Distinctive.
