Special Bottlings Continue Celebration of 75 Years of Cesare Mondavi Family Ownership
Napa, Calif., June 25, 2018 — Charles Krug Winery. one of the great family-owned wineries of the world, has announced the limited production and sale of 75 1.5L magnums of 2014 Vintage Selection Cabernet Sauvignon to continue the winery’s celebration of 75 years of Cesare Mondavi family ownership. The bottles will be available exclusively at the winery’s tasting room in St. Helena and are available now for $300.
To celebrate the 75th anniversary of the winery’s purchase by patriarch Cesare Mondavi in 1943, these 75 specially made labels—styled after the winery’s original Vintage Selection labels from the 1940s—were produced to adorn the double-bottles. In addition to these magnums, the winery produced the first-ever commercial release of Charles Krug library wines, with 75 three-packs of the 1974, 1991 and 2003 Vintage Selection Cabernets available for $1,000 combined; each purchase of the three-packs will include a specially engraved Durand device that helps open fragile corks.
To celebrate the anniversary with trade and media, Charles Krug hosted a series of masterclasses n March, April, and May, in Napa (at their St. Helena property), New York, and Dallas respectively. At each event, co-proprietor Peter Mondavi Jr. guided media and trade through a selection of eight Vintage Selection Cabernets going back to 1964, along with barrel samples of the upcoming 2015 vintage. These masterclasses featured additional educational contributions from winemaker Stacy Clark and Riana and Alycia Mondavi, members of the fourth generation of the C. Mondavi family.

Charles Krug has also participated in a number of media, trade and consumer events in the first half of 2018 including Wine Spectator’s Grand Tour in New York, Washington D.C. and Las Vegas, and Charleston Food & Wine. Charles Krug also hosted a day of events celebrating the history of Napa Valley as part of the first-ever Wine Writers Educational Tour (WWET). At the latter event, Stacy Clark took part in a “Legends of Napa Valley” panel that dissected the largest names and stories in the history of Napa Valley Wine.
Most recently, the winery’s estate was the host venue for the Barrel Auction portion of Auction Napa Valley, the country’s most celebrated Wine Charity Event. The fourth generation of Angelina, Alycia, Riana and Giovanna Mondavi—all granddaughters of Peter Mondavi Sr.—were the honorary chairs of the weekend’s Auction, making them the youngest-ever people to hold that position in the event’s 38-year history. The quartet’s youthful energy brought a reinvigorated presence to the Barrel Auction’s festivities, which broke a record for money raised during the Friday event.
The winery’s participation in this litany of events echoes the sentiment shared earlier in the year by co-proprietor Marc Mondavi, who noted the importance of the fourth generation’s impact on Charles Krug: “Our number one priority here is to make sure this stays a family estate, and I’m incredibly proud of how committed our children are in keeping it in the family.”
The second half of 2018 will see future anniversary celebrations for Charles Krug as they roll out a variety of events and sponsorships around the country including Aspen Food & Wine, summer screenings for the Napa Valley Film Festival, Cochon 555, and the official Napa Valley Film Festival in November.
