Santa Rosa, California (Sept. 16, 2015) – A just-released report analyzing the U.S. market for alcoholic beverages shows a notable lack of growth for the top producers, at least for wine and beer, while smaller companies enjoyed a fairly significant uptick in shipments. - Beer imports enjoyed 7% growth in 2014 (from 2013) while domestic beer shipments were down 0.8%.
- A deep dive into the California beer market shows the major brewers in California being down 2.5% and showed an annual decline of 1.8% over the past three years.
- The smaller brewers in California have shown a consistent growth of 18% per year over year the past three years.
- Domestic wine shipments and exports for the top 16 California wine producers were down 2.3% in 2014 (from 2013) and showed a compound annual growth rate of just 0.5% for the past 3 years
- Domestic wine shipments and exports for all other California wineries were up 11.2% in 2014 and showed a compound annual growth rate of 8% over the last 3 years
- For spirits, overall shipments were down 0.1% in 2014 (from 2013) but showed a compound annual growth rate of 1.5% over the past three years. Positive trends in the industry in 2014 were tequila up 11.3% and domestic whisky up 9.1%. Within the California market, small California distillers were up 12.9% in 2014. This is a good growth rate off a very small base. The small California distillers have only a 1.1% share of the California market whereas small California brewers have an 8.9% share of the California beer market and smaller California wineries have a 33% share of the California wine market.
