Leading Importer of Estate, Sustainable Wineries from Italy Selects Petilia to Round Out Portfolio with Offering from Campania

January 10, 2022, New York, NY — CEO Marco Stevanoni announced today that Dark Star Wines — a leading importer of estate, sustainable wines from Italy — will import dynamic, award-winning winery, Petilia from the Irpinia area of Campania, Italy. Petilia was started in 1999 by the charismatic brother/sister team, Roberto and Teresa Bruno. Roberto is the winemaker while Teresa manages sales and marketing — though always with one foot in the vineyard. “When I first met Teresa, I was intrigued by her charisma and her passion for her land,” explained Marco Stevanoni. “When I tasted the wines, I was hooked. They’re great representations of Irpinia and great expressions of minimal intervention winemaking, just what we’re looking for in the Dark Star portfolio.”

Irpinia is an ancient region of southern Italy renowned for high-altitude vineyards, volcanic and lime/clay soils, long growing seasons and diurnal temperature variations. Indigenous varieties from Irpinia include Greco di Tufo, Falanghina, Fiano di Avellino, Coda di Volpe and Aglianico. “My brother and I are committed to the vineyards and the grapes of our beautiful and historic region,” added Teresa Bruno. “We want to protect the future for these historical varieties like Greco di Tufo while making wines that young people who share our love of the land will appreciate and enjoy.”

Dark Star will distribute the Petilia wines nationally with a focus on New York State, as well as New Jersey, Massachusetts, Florida, Illinois, Texas, and California. Initial white wines to be presented to the US market include Greco di Tufo DOCG (SRP: $19), Fiano di Avellino DOCG (SRP: $18) and Falanghina IGT (SRP: $18). The Petilia reds to be launched include Aglianico DOC (SRP: $19) and the renowned Taurasi DOCG (SRP: $45). “When I taste the Petilia wines I’m transported back to my roots in Campania,” said Gianfranco Sorrentino, president of Gruppo Italiano and owner of two of New York

City’s leading Italian restaurants, Il Gattopardo and The Leopard at des Artistes. “Teresa’s energy and Roberto’s winemaking talents make them an irresistible team.”

About Petilia

The Petilia winery cultivates a great variety of grapes: Greco di Tufo, Fiano di Avellino, Aglianico and Falanghina, planted on approximately 30 hectares of vineyards. The Petilia story started in 2000 when brother and sister Roberto and Teresa Bruno participated in Vinitaly, presenting their first vintage, 1999. They were two young siblings, full of enthusiasm and fears. During the past 20 years, Roberto and Teresa have gained invaluable experience that allows them to produce wines that fully embody the tradition and the uniqueness of their territory, following the inspiration of Roberto, the enologist. They continually update the vineyards and the winery according to best contemporary practices. They are committed to growing grapes with ancient, sustainable methods of cultivation, minimum intervention and maximum respect for natural processes. The company’s mission is to collaborate with nature. Teresa and Roberto believe in the principle that life on this earth is a matter of love.
