We’ve all been hearing about the Deep Root Irrigation system invented in the Napa Valley and protected by U.S. Patent No. 8,381,437, and other U.S. and Foreign Patents Pending. This simple, affordable device inserts easily into the ground to deliver water directly to the root zone. It dramatically increases irrigation performance by increasing saturation in the root zone, while using considerably less water.
Recent scientific testing by Bryan Rahn CP Ag/SS at Coastal Viticultural Consultants (CVC) revealed that DRI had double the saturation ratio at one foot depth compared to standard drip. In addition, DRI demonstrated almost 6 times the saturation increase at a 2 foot depth over standard drip, and an incredible 20 times the saturation increase at a 3 foot depth over standard drip irrigation!
Many vineyards and orchards have already set up acreage for testing the DRI system for themselves. Drought or not, the DRI system gives growers more control. Jeff Ciudaj,of DRI systems, encourages growers to schedule their own tests early. Although warmer temperatures this spring have brought an earlier than normal growing season, it’s not too late to get your DRI units installed to benefit this years crops.
By using this controlled method of Deep Root Irrigation, its easy to understand how money could be saved in fertilizer delivery, pest and weed abatement costs, and even energy costs for pumping water.
Vineyard and orchard owners will be pleased to know that this DRI form of irrigation virtually eliminates loss of water to evaporation and run-off, and it also eliminates fertilizer run-off into creeks and streams.
