September 25, 2026 (Codevilla, Italy) — Pinot Noir is probably the grape variety that more than any other reflects in the glass the characteristics of the place where it is grown. Burgundy, Champagne, Germany, Oregon, and New Zealand have developed distinctive interpretations over time, shaped by the interaction of climate, soil composition, production traditions, and different winemaking approaches. In this context, the question naturally arises: can we also speak of an Italian style of Pinot Noir?
This question is at the heart of the work carried out by La Genisia, a winery in the Oltrepò Pavese that has chosen to place Pinot Noir at the center of its production project. Founded in 2020 from the ambitious vision of Gruppo Torrevilla, La Genisia is a young cooperative venture with strong roots, developed through an extensive zoning study conducted in collaboration with the University of Milan. This research identified the most suitable vineyards in the western Oltrepò region for cultivating Pinot Noir.
“For a long time, Italian Pinot Noir has been discussed mainly through comparison with other territories,” says Simone Fiori, winemaker at La Genisia.“Today, we believe it is necessary to start from the characteristics of our own vineyards, understand their differences, and allow those differences to guide our production decisions. We do not want to define an Italian style through rigid rules, but rather contribute to building a more conscious and recognizable identity.”
It is from this awareness that La Genisia’s project takes shape. The winery has built its vision through careful observation of the land, dedicating years to studying individual vineyard parcels in order to understand their specific characteristics and interpret them with increasing precision. Each vineyard is considered a unique asset, to be understood and enhanced through an approach that combines agronomic expertise, constant monitoring, and deep knowledge of environmental dynamics. “Research becomes a practical tool that allows us to translate the complexity of the landscape into wines capable of clearly expressing their origin,” adds Simone Fiori.
The Oltrepò Pavese represents one of Italy’s historical homes of Pinot Noir, thanks to a hilly landscape characterized by varying elevations, exposures, microclimates, and geological compositions. The combination of rolling hills, significant temperature fluctuations, diverse exposures, and a remarkable variety of soils provides ideal conditions for Pinot Noir to develop complex and multifaceted profiles, demonstrating how even a few meters of distance can profoundly influence a wine’s character.
This philosophy is reflected in the winery’s Pinot Noir labels, conceived not as variations of a single model but as distinct interpretations of the grape variety and its terroir.
In its two traditional-method sparkling wines, Oltrepò Pavese DOCG Metodo Classico Pinot Nero Extra Brut and Oltrepò Pavese DOCG Metodo Classico Pinot Nero Brut Rosé, Pinot Noir is expressed through elegance, freshness, and precision. Extended aging on the lees contributes to complexity while preserving the wine’s tension and the recognizability of the fruit
Rather than defining a style through immutable rules, La Genisia proposes a different way of looking at Italian Pinot Noir: starting from the territory, understanding its nuances, and allowing them to guide every decision, from vineyard to bottle. Because if Pinot Noir is the grape variety that more than any other conveys the voice of the place where it grows, then the Italian style can only be this: the ability to interpret the richness of one’s own territories with rigor, sensitivity, and an ever-deepening awareness of identity.
ABOUT LA GENISIA
La Genisia is a young and ambitious cooperative founded in 2020 as part of a project by the Torrevilla Group. It represents the contemporary face of the Oltrepò Pavese, bringing together twenty experienced winegrowers who cultivate a total of 70 hectares of vineyards in the municipality of Codevilla, in the province of Pavia, and the surrounding area.
The rolling hills of Lombardy provide the backdrop to a project guided by a clear philosophy, fostering constant dialogue between winery and growers in order to achieve high standards of quality. It is a path of steady growth, rooted in a deep awareness of the territory and in a thoughtful interpretation of its terroir.
The wines are recognisable for their fine and persistent perlage, offering a refined expression of Pinot Nero, the flagship grape variety cultivated and interpreted by the growers who are part of this venture.
