New Documentary the Terroirist Profiling Iconoclastic American Winegrower Randall Grahm Premiers This Weekend

October 2026 (Los Angeles, CA) — Golden Globe and Peabody Award-winning filmmaker Jeffrey Reiner, Darin Bresnitz and their production companies, Luckybuck and New Martini, announce the release of the feature documentary The Terroirist, available on all streaming platforms starting November 13, 2026.

The Terroirist is a portrait of legendary American winemaker Randall Grahm, a true rebel and iconoclast. Granted full-access, Reiner (Friday Night Lights, Lake George) chronicles Grahm’s decades-long love of winegrowing, blurring the lines of passion, obsession and possession. It’s the first time his personal and professional journey have been captured on film.

Grahm is unflinchingly candid as he shares his story from his young adulthood in Los Angeles to the establishment and eventual shocking sale of the world-renowned Bonny Doon Vineyard, to his immensely ambitious, unprecedented last mission as a vigneron. His final opus is to produce a true vin de terroir, or “wine of place,” by propagating 10,000 new grape varieties at the estate vineyard near San Juan Bautista, Calif., he calls “Popelouchum,” It’s the legacy harvest Grahm most likely will not live to see come fruition.

Also featured in The Terroirist, are Grahm’s own family, co-workers and a lineup of some of America’s most respected and lauded wine industry professionals, including sommelier André Hueston Mack, winemakers Bob Lindquist and Rajat Parr and wine writer and educator Elaine Chukan Brown.

“After years working in narrative film and television, I set out to check a long-standing item off my list: making a documentary,” said Reiner. “Thirty years earlier, a glass of rosé — Vin Gris de Cigare, from Bonny Doon winemaker Randall Grahm — had sparked a lifelong obsession with wine. Randall is a larger-than-life figure, and through his wines, his labels, and his writing, I only grew more enamored, eventually learning of his quixotic quest to discover the first truly American grape. Randall is an iconoclast, determined to conquer the impossible. In an age of fast food and a faster news cycle, here is a man sticking to his guns, committed to his land, against the odds. His journey, his candor, and his sense of humor made him the perfect subject for my first documentary.”
