New initiative will chart all Oregon vineyard land into a free, interactive 3D atlas, launching summer 2027

October 15, 2026 (Portland, OR) — The Oregon Wine Board (OWB) has launched a vineyard mapping project in partnership with Portland-based geospatial firm Terranthro LLC to build the Oregon Vineyard Atlas, a verified inventory of every vineyard planted in Oregon. The result will be a complete and credible picture of the state’s winegrowing landscape.
Terranthro will map vineyard plantings across all 23 of Oregon’s American Viticultural Areas (AVAs), as well as winegrape growing outside AVA boundaries. Using high-resolution aerial imagery and in-field verification, Terranthro will document key vineyard attributes, including historical planting and removal data on a biennial basis from 2020 to present day.
“Oregon’s winegrowing landscape is incredibly dynamic, and growers around the state need dependable information on how vineyard plantings evolve over time,” said Sally Crawford, interim executive director and chief financial officer of OWB. “The Oregon Vineyard Atlas will give our industry a shared, accurate foundation for research and planning, and anyone who uses this resource will gain a deeper understanding of what makes Oregon wine so distinct: the land it grows from.”
The Atlas will complement OWB’s existing efforts to quantify grape growing in Oregon, supporting a more complete understanding of Oregon’s vineyard landscape. Each mapped parcel will include information such as acreage, AVA, elevation, slope, aspect, soil composition and growing season climate.
The free, interactive 3D map will let users explore vineyard plantings and see how terrain, soil and climate differ across Oregon’s winegrowing regions. Users will be able to compare individual vintages with long-term climate averages and explore differences between winegrowing regions. The Atlas will be updated every two years as new statewide aerial imagery becomes available.
The mapping process will combine Terranthro’s vineyard-detection model with detailed manual boundary tracing, street-level imagery and field verification where needed. Growers, winegrower associations and OWB will collaborate to identify and confirm vineyard names and business ownership as the mapping effort moves through the state.
“I’m thrilled to work alongside OWB and the Oregon wine community,” said Hayden Smith, founder of Terranthro. “By combining cutting-edge mapping technology with growers’ on-the-ground knowledge, we’ll build a clear, data-driven picture of Oregon’s vineyards and how they’re evolving, creating a shared foundation for understanding the state’s winegrowing landscape.”
The initiative will also introduce a Grower Portal, allowing grape growers to divide mapped vineyards into individual blocks. Growers will be encouraged to contribute additional information, such as grape variety and vine age, to help increase the industry’s collective intelligence about plantings in each region.
Starting in fall 2026, the mapping will progress region by region, with field verification planned through the first half of 2027. The publicly accessible Oregon Vineyard Atlas and the Grower Portal are scheduled to launch summer 2027.
