Crealis, the trusted international leader providing tailor-made closures for still and sparkling wines since 1957, is trail blazing a path forward for screw cap manufacturing and distribution to the wine industry throughout North America.

An unrivaled industrial force in the capsules and closures industry, Crealis is expanding its outreach of their top-notch screw cap production capabilities to meet the increasing demand sweeping through the domestic wine industry marketplace.

“Screwcaps account for approximately 30% of imported wine bottles in the U.S., a segment representing roughly 1 billion bottles annually,” notes Frederic Catteau, General Manager, USA, Crealis Group. “The same trend holds true for domestic wine production, which totals about 3 billion bottles each year, with screwcaps used on approximately 30% of those bottles as well.”

In study after study, screw caps have demonstrated reliable consistency and flavor profiles to wines, free of the TCA (cork taint) contamination that continues to plague up to five percent of all wines sealed with a cork.

Screwcaps first hit the U.S. market in the 1970s, but because they were primarily used for inexpensive jug wines, they quickly earned a reputation for low quality. This lingering stigma made consumers highly skeptical between 2000 and 2010, slowing the transition away from traditional corks. Over time, however, leading winemakers helped drive a change in perception, embracing screwcaps for their consistency, ease of use, and TCA-free guarantee. Today, a new generation of wine drinkers has moved beyond these outdated associations, appreciating the flexibility and convenience that screwcaps offer.

Winemakers, in turn, have embraced the incredible quality, sensory characteristics and consistency that screw cap closures offer to their wines.

“Saran-tin closures are very airtight, allowing very little OTR (oxygen transfer rates) and are usually used for wines sensitive to oxidation,” explains Catteau. “Saranex liners made of polyethylene PVDC-LDPE layers provide more breathability. Other liners with different OTR are accessible on the market.”

“For winemakers, I think, it’s about finding the liner that provides the right OTR for the type of wine they’re looking to make.”

If solid, winemaking science is contained within the liners, the marketing magic is all about the screw cap design.

Crealis offers a comprehensive range of design options to its customers, reflecting the company’s knowledge of the market and its artistic expertise that fully supports brand creators.

The production phase, which begins with raw or painted aluminum sheets, encompasses punching & forming, spray painting, hot stamping & design and optional knurling (creating a textured or patterned surface) before the liners are inserted and the product is complete.

Customers may choose which printing process they prefer – silk screen, embossing and several types of hot stamping – as well as pick from as many as 17 different color options available in the extensive Crealis portfolio.

“We have always been viewed as a leader in customer service and design quality,” Catteau attests. “We strive to be excellent domestically, which has driven our decision to be fully integrated into the local marketplace.”

Crealis built its solid foundation of global expertise through continuous industrial investment and integration. In 2026, the company completed the process of unifying eight different international brands into one.
