Top lots include Lafite-Rothschild 2000, Cheval-Blanc 2000 and L’Evangile 2000. Provenance: an 18th century cellar in excellent condition
In 2001, the consignor invested in the best-known Bordeaux names in the latest vintage, which was quickly proclaimed a future icon, and is symbolic for many as the first wine of the new millennium. Now, 20 years later, she is selling her 18th century property and auctioning the cellar of First Growths that she has meticulously curated. The private collection was stored in a vaulted cellar, with bespoke temperature and humidity control for ideal cellaring conditions.
Two Superb Vintages
1995 was marked by a particularly hot, dry summer that produced perfectly ripe grapes. Following an abundant harvest, the châteaux rigorously selected the grapes and limited yields to optimise concentration. Highly consistent wines, rich, unctuous, and perfectly-balanced; it was truly an exceptional vintage across all the Bordeaux appellations, but we look to top producers of wines with a high proportion of Merlot – Pomerol and Saint Emilion, of course – for 1995s that are particularly noteworthy.
In addition to being a spectacular vintage, 2000 was marked by weather conditions that were particularly conducive to the ripening of Cabernet Sauvignon. The resulting wines had, and still have, a deep colour, concentrated fruit on the palate and on the nose, ripe tannins, and a remarkably long finish.
