DAVIS, Calif., April 7, 2022… The American Society for Enology and Viticulture (ASEV) is pleased to announce Dr. Pat Bowen, Honorary Research Associate for Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, will be presenting the Honorary Research Lecture, “Spatial Revelations: Monitoring, Imaging and Mapping to Characterize Vineyard Environments,” at the 73rd ASEV National Conference in San Diego, California, on June 22. ASEV honors a research lecturer who is actively involved in scientific research and has a current national or international reputation in his or her field of research.

Dr. Bowen’s current research efforts are centered on the ecophysiology of wine grapes. She uses geographic information system (GIS) tools, sensor networks and aerial imaging to characterize spatial variations in vineyard environments. By doing this, she is able to inform approaches to precision vineyard management. Her GIS work has been used in British Columbia to describe local terroirs, guide sustainable management and define appellations.

Dr. Bowen studied at the University of California at Davis, where she received her PhD in 1987. She continued with postdoctoral research at the New York State Agricultural Experiment Station. In 1990, she joined Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada as a Research Scientist. She has led the Viticulture program at Summerland Research and Development Centre since 2000. Dr. Bowen is also a Professional Affiliate at Brock University’s Cool Climate Viticulture and Oenology Institute and an Adjunct Professor at the University of British Columbia.

Founded in 1950 by a group of researchers and winemakers, the ASEV is dedicated to the interests of enologists, viticulturists and others in the fields of wine and grape research and production throughout the world. The ASEV National Conference is a forum for sharing and disseminating the latest scientific information relevant to winemaking and grapegrowing. The 73rd ASEV National Conference will be held June 20-22, 2022, in San Diego, Calif. For more information about the conference, visit www.asev.org. For the full program listing, click here. Early registration ends on June 14. To register for the conference, click here.
