Pruning demonstrations and an update on the benefits of crop insurance to be featured at the January seminar: “Pruning & Planning”

PASO ROBLES, CA, January 9, 2018-From fires to freezes, there are many perils that can devastate a wine grape vineyard. One way a grower can protect their investment and their livelihood is through crop insurance. To help growers understand how crop insurance works and prepare them for the January 31, 2018 application deadline, the Independent Grape Growers of the Paso Robles Area (IGGPRA) will feature this critical topic at their January 17, 2018 seminar. The session is the first of an eight-part annual series. It will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at St. Hilaire Vineyard located at 1950 El Pomar Drive, Templeton, Calif.

“The viticulture industry often involves risk and uncertainty,” said Kelly Mitchell of Mitchell Insurance Services of Paso Robles. “From unexpected natural disasters to major economic changes in the marketplace, many situations can affect the productivity of this business.”

Mitchell will be one of the featured speakers at the seminar, which is the first in a year-long series of timely and practical sessions and demonstrations hosted by IGGPRA. The “Practical Grape Growing Seminar Series” was launched in 2017. It is designed to provide growers and industry professionals with practical tips and information from local experts. All wine grape growers are invited and encouraged to attend.

The crop insurance presentation will kick off the session and will cover the ins and outs of crop insurance rules, costs and payouts, as well as updates on the 2018 programs available to growers. The discussion will be followed by hands-on pruning demonstrations for both head-trained and trellised vines. The featured speakers for the pruning demonstrations are St. Hilaire Vineyard grower/owner, John Anderson and Precision Ag Consulting owner/viticulturist Lowell Zelinski, Ph.D.

The seminar is free for IGGPRA members and $30/pp for non-members. Free admission to the annual seminar series is a $240 value and is just one of the many benefits that IGGPRA provides its members throughout the year.
