Classese becomes the official expression of Metodo Classico sparkling wine from Oltrepò Pavese

March 16, 2026 — Names matter, especially when they speak for a territory.
With the updated production regulations of the Oltrepò Pavese DOCG wines, Classese, a historic term long embedded in local wine culture, takes its rightful and consistent place on the label as the designation for the area’s traditional method sparkling wine.
La Genisia welcomes this step, which establishes a clearer framework for the Metodo Classico that has long been central to the identity of the region.
For producers such as La Genisia, a winery established in 2020 from a project by the Torrevilla Group, Classese offers a single, well-defined expression for wines that reflect the area’s deep connection with Pinot Nero, bringing definition and continuity to its Metodo Classico.
Oltrepò Pavese is the largest Pinot Nero growing area in Italy, accounting for more than 70 percent of Lombardy’s total plantings of the variety. In Europe, only Champagne, Burgundy and Baden cover larger areas dedicated to Pinot Nero. Here, Pinot Nero shapes the landscape as much as it does the local wine tradition.
For La Genisia, this recognition aligns naturally with its long-standing approach. The winery maintains close dialogue with its growers and has consistently worked to promote and enhance the reputation of the territory. A precise and unified name for its leading wine style supports this commitment and represents both a practical and cultural step forward.
The collaborative work carried out with the Consorzio has been instrumental in this process.
Gabriele Picchi, Director of Torrevilla, comments: “What we are seeing is a more cohesive territory taking shape, focused on producing high quality wines, with vineyards that are well distributed and gradually expanding. We are still in a transitional phase, but together with the Consorzio dell’Oltrepò we are working on a number of projects with consistency, patience and a long-term view. It has not been an easy period, yet today the group of companies committed to enhancing the territory through Classese, our Metodo Classico, is working together with a genuine sense of unity”.
This shared direction reflects a broader intention to strengthen the region’s standing through precision, coherence and collective responsibility.
Within this framework, La Genisia Metodo Classico DOCG wines take shape with elegance, freshness and a distinct mineral character, supported by a fine and persistent perlage that offers a refined interpretation of Pinot Nero grown on these hills.
ABOUT LA GENISIA
La Genisia is a young and ambitious cooperative founded in 2020 as part of a project by the Torrevilla Group. It represents the contemporary face of the Oltrepò Pavese, bringing together twenty experienced winegrowers who cultivate a total of 70 hectares of vineyards in the municipality of Codevilla, in the province of Pavia, and the surrounding area.
The rolling hills of Lombardy provide the backdrop to a project guided by a clear philosophy, fostering constant dialogue between winery and growers in order to achieve high standards of quality. It is a path of steady growth, rooted in a deep awareness of the territory and in a thoughtful interpretation of its terroir.
The wines are recognisable for their fine and persistent perlage, offering a refined expression of Pinot Nero, the flagship grape variety cultivated and interpreted by the growers who are part of this venture.
