March 25, 2024 – It is with deep sorrow that the Franzia family and Bronco Wine Co. announce the passing of John G. Franzia, a cherished father, founding partner, and esteemed figure in the wine industry.

John peacefully passed away this morning in Modesto, California, at the age of 84.

“My father was a true giant in the wine industry and leader in his field, whose quiet humility belied his monumental impact,” said Michael J. Franzia, who serves as Chairman of Board of Bronco Wine Co. “His dedication to viticulture and his expertise in enology were the cornerstone of our family business, shaping it into the success it is today. His legacy will forever be celebrated, cherished and remembered for generations to come.”

In 1973, John co-founded Bronco Wine Co. with his cousins, Fred T. and Joseph S. Franzia, with a vision to craft high-quality wines accessible to all. A trained enologist from UC Davis, John was a true farmer at heart, believing that the essence of great wines begins from exceptional vineyards.

John had a quiet nature about him, so when he spoke, people listened. He will be fondly remembered for his fierce love for his family, his exceptional craftsmanship in winemaking, and his passion for all things outdoors, particularly fly fishing. John treated everyone with warmth and respect, leaving an indelible mark on those who had the privilege of knowing him. He will be remembered for his very firm handshake.

His visionary leadership led Bronco Wine Co. to pioneer state-of-the-art winemaking facilities, shaping the industry’s standards. His enduring legacy will forever inspire future generations.

John is survived by his devoted wife of 62 years, Mary Lynne; his children Carol, Michael, Paul, and Brian; nine grandchildren; and his sisters, Barbara and Norma.

The family appreciates the overwhelming support. His memorial service will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of John G. Franzia are graciously welcomed to the Alzheimer’s/Dementia Support Center and Community Hospice & Health Services, causes close to his heart.
