Yering Station, Mount Langi Ghiran and Xanadu are recognized for quality of winemaking

Melbourne, Australia (August 1, 2023) – The wineries of Rathbone Wine Group, a leading family-owned Australian fine wine group based in Melbourne, are proud to have received nine medals from the Decanter World Wine Awards this past June. Yering Station, Mount Langi Ghiran, and Xanadu Wines were all awarded with recognition of the outstanding winemaking for which they are known.

Now in its 20th year, the Decanter World Wine Awards is recognized as the world’s largest and most influential wine competition. In 2023, over 18,000 wines from 57 countries were tasted and judged by panels of leading international wine experts. Australian wines saw particular success at this year’s competition with 10 being named “Best in Show”, more than any other country and a new record for Australian wine. For Yering Station, Mount Langi Ghiran, and Xanadu to succeed on this stage is a testament to their reputations for quality winemaking, as well as the prestige of the wine regions in which they are based. Their collection of accolades includes one platinum medal, three gold medals, three silver medals, and two bronze medals in the overall competition.

“We are proud beyond measure to have our wines receive these accolades from this competition. It is an honor to have our unique terroir and our passion for winemaking recognized and awarded,” says Darren Rathbone, CEO of Rathbone Wine Group. “It is exciting to see Australia receive the recognition it deserves on the world stage.”

The following is a list of medals and scores awarded to the wines at the 2023 Decanter World Wine Awards:

  • Xanadu Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2020 – Platinum Medal, 97 points

  • Yering Station Village Chardonnay 2021 – Bronze Medal, 89 points
  • Yering Station Village Pinot Noir 2021 – Bronze Medal, 88 points

These wineries are no stranger to recognition, as each is superlative in its own way:

Yering Station, located in the Yarra Valley, is a star of cool-climate Australian winemaking with a long history of innovation and tradition. The winery was the site of the first vineyards ever planted in the state of Victoria, in 1838, and produced internationally renowned wines well into the 1880s. Today, as part of The Rathbone Wine Group, Yering Station has reclaimed its legacy as one of Australia’s most revered producers of cool-climate Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, and a leader in viticultural innovation.

Mount Langi Ghiran is a pioneer of cool climate Shiraz. Its unique and remote location, granitic soils and vines grown from a pre-phylloxera source combine to create wines that are complex and concentrated yet perfumed and exotic. Considered a benchmark, this is one of Australia’s most distinctive expressions of Shiraz.

Xanadu was one of the first wineries established in Margaret River, Australia, and one of the first in the region to achieve sustainability certification. Xanadu has long set the standard on top-quality wines with varietal and regional integrity. The winemaking team’s meticulous dedication to quality has borne abundant fruit – hundreds of trophies and gold medals in prestigious wine competitions since 2007.

MOUNT LANGI GHIRAN

Mount Langi Ghiran is an Australian pioneer in cool climate Shiraz. Since the late 1960s, Mount Langi Ghiran has been a testament to the fortitude and vision of its owners and winemakers, committed to a distinctively vibrant and elegant Shiraz afforded by a fortunate alignment of natural elements in the Grampian region of southeastern Australia. Cooled by prevailing winds from the Southern Ocean and located in a north-south valley shielded from warm afternoon sun, the estate vineyards are composed of granite sands over sedimentary red clay loam scarcely found in Australia and ideal for Shiraz. These are among the last Shiraz to be harvested in Australia each season. Derived from the indigenous name for the Yellow Tailed Black Cockatoo, Mount Langi Ghiran is family-owned and managed by Rathbone Wine Group.

XANADU

Xanadu is a family-owned and operated winery as idyllic as the enchanted paradise it is named for. One of the first wineries established in Margaret River, Australia, it is also one of the first in the region to achieve sustainability certification. Xanadu has long set the standard on top-quality wines with varietal and regional integrity. The Rathbone family purchased Xanadu in 2005, recognizing its rare combination of premiere viticulture, winemaking, and hospitality in one of the country’s most important wine regions. Senior Winemaker Glenn Goodall has crafted Xanadu wines for over 20 years and works closely with viticulturist Rob Underdown to improve quality and better showcase the brilliance of the vineyard with each new growing season. Glenn was awarded the 2023 Halliday Wine Companion Winemaker of the Year Award.
