The California Department of Food and Agriculture’s Final Grape Crush Report for 2018 is a barometer for the wine and grape industry, containing prices and tons of wine grapes crushed during the 2018 harvest. The Crush Report provides growers and wineries insight into the inventory position for the California wine business as a whole, and influences market dynamics for the current bulk wine market as well as the upcoming 2019 harvest.

WHEN: CDFA is scheduled to release the Grape Crush Report at noon on Wednesday, April 10, 2019.

ANALYSIS: The April 10th release will be the only Crush Report distributed for the 2018 crop. A very mild summer led to larger than average yields per acre, particularly in the coast, and likely led to a record 2018 crop. The crop, paired with slowing retail sales, led to lower contract prices for grapes from many areas of the state later in the year, and we will analyze the decrease in district average prices. The industry has moved past this harvest in many ways due to the delayed release, but we will more clearly understand the degree of excess by variety and region once the report is released.
