Spain’s Noble Red Variety will Mark a Day of Fiesta on November 11th

Vina ZacoNEW YORK, NY (October 29, 2015) ‒ Tempranillo lovers are invited to join Viña Zaco to celebrate World Tempranillo Day on November 11 with the release of the 2014 vintage. Made from 100% Tempranillo, Viña Zaco is a D.O.Ca. Rioja wine that epitomizes a blend of classic and modern style.

Considered Spain’s most noble red variety, Tempranillo reveals a spectrum of character which varies greatly by region. Zaco sources its fruit from the Haro district in Rioja Alta. The cooler Atlantic climate in this northerly area allows for a long ripening cycle through which Tempranillo can develop an intense red fruit character and bright acidity.

“We created Zaco to put our best Tempranillo fruit forward in the blend,” states Winemaker Diego Pinilla. “This is meant to be an approachable, ready-to-drink wine which shows how fresh and modern Tempranillo can taste at its prime while still retaining the complexity we get from our vineyards in Haro.”

Tasting Notes on our *New Release* ‒ Zaco 2014 (100% Tempranillo):

Moderated by the cooler Atlantic climate influence in the Haro region, Zaco 2014 shows good acidity to match the intense black fruit. The 2014 growing season benefitted from favorable weather and excellent canopy development, however less than ideal weather during the harvest tested many vintners in Rioja. We minimized any adverse effects with cluster thinning and leaf-removal, then acted quickly to harvest in only two days in mid-October to secure prime fruit. Zaco 2014 underwent an extended cold pre-maceration to bring out the ripe, Tempranillo character and round, sweet tannins. After six months of ageing in French and American oak, Zaco 2014 is bold and well-balanced, and shows black, spicy fruit character with some floral notes and toasted flavors from the oak. It’s everything we love about Tempranillo!

– Winemaker Diego Pinilla, Viña Zaco

Zaco was first released by Bodegas Bilbainas in 2005 to showcase the rich, fruit character of Tempranillo available in the Haro region in Rioja Alta. One of the first and most celebrated wineries in Rioja, Bodegas Bilbainas owns over 600 acres of quality vineyards in Haro. The winery is wholly-owned by Bodegas y Viñedos Codorníu-Raventos, the oldest winemaking family in Spain. Zaco is exclusively imported by Aveníu Brands (Baltimore, MD). The suggested retail price of Zaco 2014 is $15.00.
