AVA & Labeling with the TTB

The label of a bottle informs the consumer of many different aspects of the delicious wine that is contained within the bottle. Our guest lecturer from upstate New York, Meaghan Frank, will discuss the benefits of having two labels for the same winery and what it communicates to the consumer. In addition, a representative from the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) will deliver an overview of different types of wine labels, what information is required to be on the label, and common pitfalls for labeling.

Information contained on the label can give an understanding of the region, known as an American Viticultural Area (AVA). Come hear the story of Rachel Martin that is the sole reason “Middleburg AVA” is on the map and the motivation behind her pursuit. A representative from the TTB will provide an overview of the AVA process and what is required before a new AVA can be declared.
