Although D.O. Cava saw a slight decline in domestic and international sales, organic Cavas grew by 15.23%, and the association introduced two new Integral Producers and a new Cava de Guarda Superior de Paraje Calificado.
VILAFRANCA DEL PENEDÈS, April 2025 — The D.O. Cava region continues to face the impact of a severe three-year drought that has significantly reduced production and supply. The German market has been hit hardest, with a drop of nearly 20 million bottles (19.9 million). Despite these challenges, Cava has managed to increase sales value, with a 7.2% growth in the domestic market, and a continued rise in international markets.
In 2024, the D.O. Cava recorded total sales of 218 million bottles, a 13.39% decrease from 2023, with 78 million bottles sold domestically (down 3.5% in volume, but up 3.7% in value) and 140 million internationally (down 18%). Belgium remains the largest foreign market, followed by the U.S. and the U.K. Japan, the Netherlands, and Sweden were the standout markets with notable increases in sales.
Key growth areas include organic Cavas, with sales up 15.24% to 37.3 million bottles, and the premium Cavas de Guarda Superior Paraje Calificado, which grew by 13.33%, including a 58.54% increase in the domestic market. D.O. Cava’s most exclusive offerings continue to gain recognition internationally.
President Javier Pagés remains optimistic, citing the global appeal and growing demand for Cava, as well as the sector’s continued focus on sustainability, quality, and traceability. Notably, all Cavas de Guarda Superior will be 100% organic in 2025.
The sector’s diverse offering, particularly the Elaborador Integral (Integral Producer) category, continues to elevate the Cava brand globally. This category now includes 17 wineries, with Mastinell and Ondarre being the latest additions. These two join the 15 wineries that have already obtained a seal accrediting that they carry out the entire winemaking process on their property. The ‘Elaborador Integral’ label is reserved for wineries that press and produce 100% of the base wine for their own Cava, craft the entire Cava on-site, and do not source rack-aged or riddled bottles from other producers.
Experience Cava First-Hand
Cava also remains committed to global promotion, hosting events like the international Discovery Week, which saw participation from key cities including Tokyo, New York, Washington D.C., and London. This year, the regulatory board has partnered with GuildSomm International to host The Great Cava Pursuit—an exciting competition designed to deepen and test beverage professionals’ knowledge of Cava. Events will be held in four cities: Los Angeles (April 8), Dallas (April 10), Washington D.C. (April 15), and Tampa (April 17). Two winners per event will be invited to participate in an all-expenses-paid educational immersion of the Cava region in Spain in fall 2025. Limited seating is still available; for more details and to apply, visit: https://forms.gle/J7bUW4uuETfC9Fyv5.
