Early challenges gave way to remarkable wines
Melbourne, Australia (June 26, 2023) – Rathbone Wine Group, a leading family-owned Australian fine wine group based in Melbourne, is thrilled to report that the 2023 vintage is looking excellent, with some exciting expressions on offer for wine lovers from their properties in Victoria and Western Australia.
In the Yarra Valley of Victoria, Yering Station faced some of the toughest conditions they’d ever encountered at the early part of the season. But in the end Chief Viticulturist Rod Harrison says, “we’ve grown some of the best fruit we’ve seen, particularly Pinot Noir and Chardonnay”. Chief Winemaker Brendan Hawker adds, “from our Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from 2023 you can expect high natural acidities and a high concentration of flavor.”
Up in the Grampians area of Victoria, Chief Winemaker Adam Louder of Mount Langi Ghiran advised that the 2023 vintage will be one to remember: “The white wines as a whole are consistently impressive even in these early stages, and we are confident the red wines will display elegance and spice – representative of the season and our site.”
Glenn Goodall, Senior Winemaker at Xanadu in Margaret River, also reports an exciting vintage, saying “our 2023 vintage has wrapped up and we couldn’t be happier with the results. One of the highlights from this year will be the Chardonnay wines it produces, though for sure our Cabernets are not to be missed either. The Chardonnay wines already show our consistent house style; bright tangy fruits with lovely natural acid backbone giving the wines focus.”
The wines from the 2023 vintage are well positioned to continue the legacy of high quality Australian wines. Darren Rathbone, CEO of Rathbone Wine Group, points out, “Australian wine consistently out performs wines on a value basis from across the world. When you spend $50 on a bottle of Yarra Valley Pinot Noir for example, you are getting a world class example of Pinot Noir that can stand up to anything else in that price bracket from anywhere in the world. And I’m happy to report that 2023’s Pinot Noirs, as well as the Chardonnays and all of our other varieties, will continue this legacy.”

At this year’s TEXSOM Awards the wines received a Platinum Medal (Mount Langi Ghiran Cliff Edge Shiraz 2020), Gold Medals (Xanadu Vinework Chardonnay 2021 and Xanadu Circa 77 Cabernet Sauvignon 2019) and Silver Medals (Yering Station Little Yering Pinot Noir 2019 and Yering Station Chardonnay 2022)
