Resurrection of Chenin Blanc an homage to the family’s past and bright future ahead

Napa, CA – The Mondavi Sisters, owners of the Aloft and Dark Matter wines, are proud to announce the release of their Chenin Blanc. Labeled under the boutique brand Aloft, the Chenin Blanc will be the first white wine from the sisters, a throwback to past expressions developed by their Grandfather, Peter Mondavi Sr., over 60 years ago.

While still widely grown in other winemaking regions, Chenin Blanc has been surpassed in recent years by the more popular Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay grapes. In fact, the Mondavi sister’s research revealed that there were less than seven total acres of Chenin Blanc being grown in Napa Valley – making it a true rarity.

“Like so many of our friends in the industry, recent months have been challenging” said Aloft CEO Alycia Mondavi. “Our release date for this wine was pushed back multiple times while we awaited boxes, labels, and other supplies to complete the packaging – we had to remain nimble. Yet, we think you’ll find it well worth the wait – this Chenin Blanc connects the past with present and should be enjoyed with those you love,” she continued. “While sheltered-in-place, my sisters and I have become close with many of our collectors and followers. It has been such a pleasure to build a deeper connection with everyone, pulling together as a family and community to overcome this virus. Although a small gesture, we are excited to give our supporters a reason to smile right now” she concluded.

The Aloft Chenin Blanc was picked on September 3, 2019 and took 34 days to complete fermentation. It was cold fermented (Peter Mondavi Sr.’s legacy and contribution to modern day winemaking) in a stainless-steel tank and one French Oak barrel, comprising 10% of the blend. This single barrel of aged Chenin Blanc in French oak contributes another layer of complexity and dimension to the mouthfeel, whereas the tank fermentation retained the delicate aromas of white and purple floral notes, lime zest and citrus notes along with the vibrant acidity naturally found in Chenin Blanc.

“The secret of our Chenin Blanc is the fruit sourced from a 74-year-old vineyard located practically in our backyard,” said winemaker Angelina Mondavi. “This is such a personal wine for us that brings our story full circle, back to everything our grandfather taught us. Our first vintage is a beautiful white wine, feminine in character with refreshing acidity and roundness. I’m proud of it now, and even more excited to see what it becomes over the years.”

The Chenin Blanc is available to order now in a three-pack starting with a retail price of $225. Wine enthusiasts interested in Aloft and Dark Matter Wines should inquire at www.aloftwines.com.
