San Francisco, CA – November 11, 2019 – As many are searching their roots today, mother-daughter team, Helen Yanek and Deanne Travis of San Francisco have traced their maternal roots to Bulgaria. During a trip to meet their family and experience the culture of their Bulgarian heritage the duo experienced much more than they ever imagined. They discovered Bulgaria’s 5,000 year wine making history.

Upon returning to San Francisco they wanted to invite friends for a traditional Bulgarian dinner with wine. Of course, the ingredients for the recipes were available but they couldn’t find Bulgarian wine. Was the wine really as delicious as they remembered? Why was Bulgarian wine not available in California? A return trip solidified their belief that US wine enthusiasts were missing out . . . and Kristova Family Partners was born.

Kristova Family Partners is excited to announce that the “BIO” line from Bulgarian winery Edoardo Miroglio is being carried by most Northern California Whole Foods Markets. The BIO red blend highlights two of Bulgaria’s most well-known indigenous grapes, Mavrud and Rubin. Mavrud, from the Greek word mavro (black), refers to the color of the grape. Rubin is a cross between Nebbiolo and Syrah. The BIO red has a complex and fresh fruit nose of blackcurrant, cherry, and blackberry, elegantly balanced with oak.  The rich fruity flavor is elevated with acidity and soft tannins. Many of the stores are also carrying the white blend made from Viognier & Traminer. Both wines are made with organic grapes and are vegan. This placement was solidified in partnership with their distributor Mountain People’s Wine Distributing.

Caroline Gilby writes in The Wines of BULGARIA, ROMANIA, AND MOLDOVA, “Like all of Eastern Europe…the Bulgarian wine industry has undergone a complete revolution…and has emerged as an exciting and dynamic scene, scattered with wines that I would be genuinely happy to recommend to anybody.”

Bulgarian wines are newfound gems from the Old World.  And, Bulgarian wineries are embracing sustainable practices and reviving indigenous varieties.  Wine enthusiasts can now easily explore wine from the ancient Balkan Region. Consumers can contact MPW to confirm availability at their local Whole Foods at 530.265.0300 or orders@mpwwine.com.
