Another Major Milestone for the Vermouth di Torino Consortium: Official Recognition by MASAF

December 1, 2025 (Turin, Italy) — The Italian Ministry of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Forests (MASAF) has officially recognized the Vermouth di Torino Consortium, marking a significant milestone in the promotion and protection of this Piedmontese excellence — the aromatic wine infused with herbs and spices, known and appreciated worldwide.

As underlined by Minister Francesco Lollobrigida, this decision reaffirms the government’s commitment to safeguarding and enhancing regional productions, further strengthening the system of Geographical Indications, which today is worth over 20 billion euros in production value and represents 16% of Italian agri-food exports.

This recognition represents a pivotal step for Vermouth di Torino — a product that originates exclusively from Turin and Piedmont — confirming its role as an exceptional ambassador of tradition, territory, conviviality, and a distinctive lifestyle. It also consolidates the strategic role of the Consorzio in defending and promoting the PGI Vermouth/Vermut di Torino, the only Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) in the world officially recognized for a vermouth.

The Consortium now holds full authority to ensure that the name of this PGI is used correctly and not in a misleading manner, actively combating counterfeiting, unfair competition, imitations, and improper uses of the denomination that could deceive consumers or harm producers. In addition to its protective functions, the Consortium will also have the institutional mandate to promote and enhance this certified PGI production — a mission it has already been pursuing through initiatives carried out in Italy and across the world.

This important achievement is the result of years of dedicated work by Roberto Bava, President of the Consortium since its foundation until October 3rd of the current year, and by Director Pierstefano Berta, with the valuable collaboration of Federvini, in particular its Director Gabriele Castelli.

Today, the Consortium is chaired by Bruno Malavasi, supported by Vice Presidents Roberto Bava and Giorgio Castagnotti, and officially recognized as the representative body of an entire supply chain of great significance — including major multinational companies with local facilities, medium and small producers, both historic and newly established brands, and representatives of the aromatic herb sector. The Consortium thus stands as an authoritative entity entrusted with protecting the collective interests of the recognized PGI, acting as a voice for the sector before institutions and ensuring an open, transparent governance system in line with current regulations.

Thanks to MASAF’s official recognition, the Vermouth di Torino Consortium is now formally acknowledged as the custodian and guarantor of a valuable cultural, social, and economic heritage.

President Bruno Malavasi stated: “We welcome with great satisfaction the recognition of the Vermouth di Torino Consortium which, as rightly highlighted in MASAF’s announcement, represents the first aromatized wine to receive protection of this level. It is only fair to acknowledge the merit of this important achievement to the outstanding work carried out in recent years by past president Roberto Bava and by director Pierstefano Berta. This is an additional incentive for all of us as we embark on a new phase of growth.”
