Joseph Mellot Acquires Domaine Michaud in Touraine-Chenonceaux, Expanding Its Loire Valley Holdings

A strategic acquisition—imported in the U.S. by Albert Bichot USA—rooted in shared values, generational winemaking, and a continued commitment to Loire Valley terroir

August 12, 2025 (Sancerre, France) —  In a move that underscores its long-term vision and leadership within the Loire Valley, Joseph Mellot, one of the region’s most historic and respected wine estates, is pleased to announce the acquisition of Domaine Michaud, a highly regarded organic estate in the Touraine-Chenonceaux AOP. This strategic expansion enhances Joseph Mellot’s presence in one of the Loire’s most promising appellations for fine white wines, particularly Sauvignon Blanc.

“This is more than a business decision—it is the continuation of a shared philosophy. Domaine Michaud reflects everything we value: integrity, heritage, and an unwavering commitment to terroir,” said Catherine Corbeau-Mellot, President of Joseph Mellot. “We are honored to build upon the Michaud family’s extraordinary work and to ensure its legacy lives on for generations to come.”

The relationship between the two families spans over four decades. Alexandre Mellot and Thierry Michaud, both heirs to longstanding winemaking traditions, met in the early 1980s while studying viticulture in Beaune. As each took the helm of their respective domaines—Mellot in Sancerre (1984) and Michaud in Touraine-Chenonceaux (1985)—a friendship flourished, rooted in mutual respect and a deep understanding of the land.

The collaboration deepened when Catherine Corbeau-Mellot, who succeeded her husband Alexandre after his passing in 2005, began distributing Domaine Michaud’s wines. When Thierry and Dorothée Michaud prepared for retirement in 2023, entrusting the future of their estate to the Mellot family was a natural and heartfelt transition.

“This transfer of stewardship feels both symbolic and profoundly personal,” added Adrien Mellot, representing the next generation of the Mellot family. “It honors our families’ history while reinforcing our responsibility to protect and elevate the identity of Touraine-Chenonceaux.”

This acquisition reaffirms the Mellot family’s long-standing commitment to cultivating terroir with the utmost respect, sustainability, and precision—values shared by both estates and central to their enduring legacies.

In 2025, Catherine, along with sons Adrien and Armand, formally assumed management of Domaine Michaud.
