September 28th – Since our first vintage in 1973, we have been dedicated to doing what is right for the environment.  Our commitment to sustainability encompasses all parts of our organization from the vineyards to the cellar, business operations and people practices, reflecting our company values.  Over the past three decades we have become Napa Green certified, Napa Land certified, and in 2018 were the recipients of the California Green Medal Business Award in recognition of our innovation, efficiency, and sustainability based employee practices such as carpooling and employee training.

I am pleased to share that Cakebread Cellars is once again taking its sustainability commitment and actions one step further by becoming a member of International Wineries for Climate Action (IWCA).  IWCA is a collaborative working group of environmentally committed wineries focused on a science-based approach to reducing carbon emissions across the wine industry.  Each member within IWCA takes responsibility to hold themselves and each other accountable to build a cleaner, more resilient wine community for future generations.  The goal of the organization is to share best practices that mitigate climate impacts in vineyard and winery operations so that we can all act collectively to decarbonize the global wine industry today, by applying direct solutions avoiding offsetting carbon credits.

Over the next several months, we will be working collaboratively across departments and with the support of our Green Team to complete our first greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions inventory.  This inventory will assist us in calculating and verifying Cakebread Cellars’ emissions and will serve as our annual guide to continued improvement in sustainability and climate change.  Tomorrow there will be a press release announcing our membership with IWCA.  Please join me in celebrating this membership and our continued commitment to sustainability practices.
