St. Josef’s 43rd Annual Grapestomping Festival Returns This Fall

The Northwest’s Original Grapestomping event celebrates 43 years of wine, tradition, and stomping fun

September 2, 2025 (Canby, OR)St. Josef’s Winery invites guests to celebrate a beloved local tradition at its 43rd Annual Grapestomping Festival, taking place Saturday, September 20, and Sunday, September 21, from noon to 5 p.m. each day.

One of Oregon’s wine pioneers, St. Josef’s launched its lively harvest festival in 1983—back when there were fewer than 30 wineries in the entire state. Today, Oregon is home to over 1,000. The festival features award-winning wines, traditional German music, house-made sausage and kraut, and, of course, plenty of grapestomping. It began even before Oregon’s first microbreweries and proudly holds the title of the Northwest’s original grapestomping event.

The Grapestomping started as proprietors, Josef and Lilli Fleischmann who emigrated from Germany, wanted to pass on some harvest spirit to the burgeoning Oregon wine industry. Since working the vineyards and running a winery is a lot of hard work, they believed it was important to start the busy “crush” season with a lighthearted approach. With lively German music, local foods and of course, stomping grapes in a barrel. It has grown to stomping in a 1200 gallon Oak barrel that holds the 1,000 glasses of wine, live music and house recipe foods in a casual, relaxed European atmosphere.

In addition to Grapestomping contests held throughout the day, the Gordonaires, a six-piece German Band will be performing from 1:00 pm to 4:30 pm on Saturday and Sunday. Food includes St Josef’s own special house recipe German sausages and homemade sauerkraut, along with other locally made foods. New vintages and special reserve wines will be available by the glass, plus tours with the winemaker and tastings will occur throughout the day.

St Josef’s is one of Oregon’s Wine Pioneers with vineyards planted in 1978 and first legal vintage in 1983. 99% of production is from the property and the 40 acres of estate vineyards have been awarded ‘Salmon Safe’ designation and are tended without the use of irrigation, harsh chemicals or pesticides. St Josef’s grows and makes food-friendly wines that can enhance any day without breaking the bank; as well as a line of reserve wines to enjoy on special occasions. The event will feature all of the current releases; selections of reserve wines and sparkling wines – including the latest releases of award winning Lilli Sparkling wines, St Josef’s Chardonnay and Kitara Reserve Syrah.
