Now the largest CCOF-certified wine grape grower in the Central Coast

Salinas, CA – January 22, 2023 – Scheid Family Wines, a pioneer of the Monterey winegrowing region, is proud to announce significant developments during the 2023 harvest season, showcasing their expanded commitment to organic  farming.

In 2023, Scheid Family Wines achieved organic certification on 523 additional acres of wine grapes, bringing its total to  over 600 certified acres. According to California Certified Organic Farmers (CCOF), Scheid Family Wines is now the largest certified organic winegrape grower in the Central Coast. Scheid is furthering its commitment to organic farming in 2024, with an additional 57 acres currently in its third year of transitional certification, anticipated to achieve full certification in November. The 2023 vintage marked Scheid’s fourth organic harvest, which began with the organic certification of its 86-acre White Flower Vineyard in 2020.

Scheid’s Director of Vineyard Operations Dan Lompa commented, “Organic farming makes you pay attention to each aspect of the vineyard and use care and consideration with every decision. It isn’t always easy, but the additional inputs and effort are worth it because it maximizes quality, and the wines express a true sense of place. It’s a real commitment to farm organically but it’s also really exciting to see how far we’ve come.”

To honor their commitment to organic farming, in 2023 the company launched Grandeur Wines, inspired by the beauty of mother nature and preserving the land for future generations. Certified Organic by CCOF, Grandeur Wines’ current product offerings are a Rosé and Red Blend made with organic grapes, with a Cabernet Sauvignon hiƫng the market in 2024.

The idea of Grandeur, Scheid Family Wines’ first organic wine brand, was inspired by Scheid’s organically certified White Flower Vineyard. The vineyard is planted around an old Blue Oak tree that houses a resident bee colony and the label prominently features a bee. In 2023, Grandeur Wines partnered with The Bee Girl Organization, donating money for each bottle sold to build and preserve bee habitats in support of regenerative agriculture. This year, Scheid Family Wines is working to obtain a bee-friendly vineyard certification for White Flower Vineyard, further supporting biodiversity and the preservation of essential pollinators.
