June 23 (Johnson City, TX) — Ninety-six hospitality professionals from across Texas gathered on June 23 for the latest GRAFTED educational event, bringing together winery owners, restaurant operators, hospitality leaders, and wine and spirits professionals for a full day dedicated to leadership, personal growth, and building a stronger hospitality community.
GRAFTED was created to provide a place where women in wine could grow, connect, and lead in an industry that has traditionally been male dominated. While rooted in supporting women, GRAFTED welcomes all hospitality professionals who believe collaboration, mentorship, and education strengthen the entire industry. Inspired by the vineyard itself, the name GRAFTED reflects the practice of joining a vine to its rootstock to create something stronger, more resilient, and built to flourish.
“We created GRAFTED because we saw a need for women in our industry to have a place where they could grow professionally, build relationships, and find mentors,” said Claire Richardson, Co-Founder of GRAFTED. “What has been so rewarding is watching that vision grow into a community that welcomes everyone who believes in investing in people. Hospitality is built on relationships, and that’s exactly what GRAFTED is cultivating.”
The day began with a leadership breakfast at William Chris Vineyards where the discussion centered around wholesale and DTC sales. Continuing at Wrenwood Ranch in Johnson City, nationally recognized hospitality leader Carlin Karr, of Frasca Food and Wine and Benvenusa, served as the keynote speaker throughout the day. Karr opened the afternoon session titled Hospitality as Culture and Currency by sharing lessons on leadership, culture, and building organizations where employees feel valued, empowered, and inspired to serve others. She challenged attendees to view hospitality as much more than guest service.
“Grafted was an incredible day of connection and growth. I was very inspired by the level of engagement by attendees and the diversity of programming offered in a small amount of time. This focus on community, hospitality and education is something every wine and hospitality community could benefit from. Overall, what Claire and her team has created with Grafted is truly inspiring” said Carlin Karr.
Building on that message, international mindset coach, facilitator, and author Simone Reichert led an inspiring session focused on intentional leadership, resilience, and making personal well-being a priority. Reichert encouraged attendees to recognize that great leadership begins with taking care of themselves first. Following her presentation, she signed copies of her newly released book, The Fifth Element, while continuing conversations with attendees.
The educational experience concluded with one of GRAFTED’s signature sessions, a comparative tasting featuring Texas wines alongside their Italian counterparts. Guests explored how many Texas varietals trace their heritage to Italy while discussing terroir, winemaking styles, and guest education. The tasting was complemented by thoughtfully curated food pairings prepared by Chef Christophe of Herencia Cuisine.
Throughout the day, attendees connected with peers from across the hospitality industry, exchanging ideas and building relationships that extend well beyond the event itself.
“Events like GRAFTED remind us that our industry is strongest when we’re willing to share ideas and learn from one another. I left with practical leadership insights, meaningful new connections, and a renewed appreciation for the collaborative spirit that makes Texas hospitality so special.” said Beth Valley, General Manager of Texas Wine Collective.
Valerie Elkins, Co-Founder of Texas Wine Auction Foundation, believes those connections are exactly what the program was designed to create.
“Our goal has never been to host another conference,” said Elkins. “We wanted to build a community where people feel comfortable learning, asking questions, and supporting one another. Whether you’re new to the industry or have decades of experience, there’s always something we can learn from each other. When we invest in people, we strengthen the future of Texas wine and its people.
Powered by the Texas Wine Auction Foundation, GRAFTED extends the Foundation’s mission of investing in people through education, mentorship, and leadership development. While the Foundation supports wellness, education, and sustainability through charitable giving, GRAFTED creates year-round opportunities for hospitality professionals to learn, grow, and build lasting connections.
