Scalo Vallino – University of Turin – Via Nizza 40 – TURIN

May 20, 2026 (Turin, Italy) — The Consorzio del Vermouth di Torino is shining a spotlight on a new and highly relevant topic. Protecting Vermouth di Torino worldwide is not only a responsibility entrusted to the Consortium by the Italian Ministry of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Forestry (MASAF), but also a mission embraced as a commitment to preserve and defend the identity and excellence of Vermouth di Torino on the international stage.

On Tuesday, May 26th, 2026, the University of Turin will host an international multidisciplinary conference focusing on technical, regulatory and marketing aspects involved in the promotion, protection and safeguarding of PGIs, PDOs and registered trademarks containing geographical names, within a rapidly evolving global landscape.

How is the quality of Italian PGIs certified on international markets? What strategies can be adopted to defend Origin within the global marketplace? What synergies may exist between collective trademarks and Designations of Origin? Which protection means are offered by European Union’s adherence to the Geneva Act of the Lisbon Agreement? How will Italian PGIs and PDOs be protected in South America, India, Japan, Australia and Vietnam? These are all Countries with which the European Union has developed agreements and where important developments are expected in the coming months. Distinguished Italian and international experts will address these pressing questions.

Given the significance of the event, the Consortium will collaborate with UGIVI (Union of Wine and Vine Lawyers), the Academy of Agriculture of TurinCONVIVI (Interdepartmental Research Centre for Viticulture and Wine – University of Turin), the Turin Chamber of Commerce, and OICCE (Interprofessional Organization for the Communication of Knowledge in Oenology).

The conference will take as its case study the term “Torino,” the geographical name contained within the PGI “Vermouth di Torino.” From this starting point, discussions will highlight current best practices, existing international risks, and opportunities for enhanced protection and promotion of Designations of Origin, Geographical Indications and collective trademarks within the wine and aromatized wine sectors that contain geographical references.

Taking regulatory framework and essenital requirements as foundation for controls and protection systems, the conference will explore available means and possible protection strategies, the role of Protection Consortia and supervisory authorities, territorial development policies, and active monitoring strategies.

Following opening remarks by Bruno Malavasi, President of the Consorzio del Vermouth di Torino, and representatives of the institutions collaborating to the conference, the introductory keynote speech will be delivered by Minister Plenipotentiary Andrea Mazzella (Director of the International Relations Office – Italian Customs and Monopolies Agency), who will address “The Role of the Italian Customs and Monopolies Agency as Certifier of the Quality of Italian PGIs for International Markets.”

Additional contributions will follow from leading Italian law firms, the Turin Laboratory of the Italian Customs and Monopolies Agency, the Turin Chamber of Commerce, and Turismo Torino. Alongside these speakers, international experts from Australia, Brazil, Japan, India and Vietnam will provide insights into the protection of Italian PGIs/PDOs within the policies of their respective countries and international agreements.

The conference will take place in one of Turin’s symbolic locations, next to Porta Nuova railway station: the Scalo Merci Vallino, a structure built at the end of the nineteenth century that served for more than a century as a strategic hub for the city’s economic and industrial growth. Today, it is at the center of a major redevelopment project involving the University of Turin, Faculty of Medicine.

The conference may be attended both in person and via video conference. Participation is free of charge, but prior registration is mandatory for all attendees.
