June 30, 2026 — Robert “Bob” Morus, beloved founder of Phelps Creek Vineyards, pioneering Columbia Gorge winegrower, and lifelong advocate for Oregon wine, passed away peacefully on Father’s Day, June 21, 2026, surrounded by his children.
Bob’s life was defined by vision, determination, and a deep love for the land. In 1990, he planted what would become Phelps Creek Vineyards on the slopes of Oregon’s Hood River Valley, helping establish the Columbia Gorge as one of the Pacific Northwest’s most exciting wine regions. Long before the area was widely recognized for world-class wine, Bob saw its potential and dedicated himself to proving that exceptional wines could be grown in the Gorge’s unique climate and soils.
Over the next three decades, Bob became one of the Columbia Gorge’s most respected wine industry leaders. As president of the Columbia Gorge Winegrowers Association, he helped unite growers and wineries in a shared effort to elevate the region’s reputation. His influence extended statewide through his service as a director of the Oregon Winegrowers Association and the Oregon Wine Board. In addition to serving as chair of the OWB, he also led its International Committee for many years, where he championed Oregon wines on the global stage. Through countless trade missions, tastings, and educational programs, he worked tirelessly to introduce Oregon wines to new audiences around the world.
Despite the recognition Phelps Creek received, Bob remained focused not on personal accolades, but on the future of Oregon wine. He believed deeply in collaboration, mentorship, and the power of community. Fellow growers, winemakers, and industry leaders knew him as a generous advocate who celebrated the success of others as enthusiastically as his own.
At the heart of Bob’s work was a deep belief that Pinot Noir begins in the vineyard. Inspired by the great wines of Burgundy, he pursued elegance, balance, and a true expression of place in every vintage. He believed that wine should reflect its origin and tell the story of the people who farmed it. That commitment to authenticity shaped Phelps Creek’s identity and earned the winery acclaim for its wines over many years.
A former U.S. Air Force pilot and retired Delta Air Lines captain whose career took him around the globe, Bob’s greatest partnership began in Hong Kong, where he met Lynette. Together they built not only a life but a shared vision for Phelps Creek. For the past 15 years, they worked side by side, growing the winery, welcoming visitors from around the world, and creating a legacy for future generations. Their partnership was built on mutual respect, shared purpose, and an unwavering belief in the possibilities of Oregon wine.
Those who knew Bob will remember his curiosity, generosity, and enthusiasm. He was equally comfortable discussing vineyard soils, international wine markets, jazz music, family stories, or the latest harvest. He approached life with energy, optimism, and a willingness to embrace new challenges. Whether mentoring a young winemaker, welcoming guests at the vineyard, or representing Oregon wine abroad, Bob brought generosity, authenticity, and passion to everything he did.
Bob leaves behind a remarkable legacy in the vineyards he planted, the community he helped build, and the countless friendships he cultivated throughout his life. Above all, he leaves behind a devoted family who shared in his journey, his dreams, and his enduring love of Oregon wine.
His impact on the Columbia Gorge, Oregon wine, and the people fortunate enough to know him will endure for generations.
Every harvest, every glass raised among friends, the vineyard at sunset, and every beautifully crafted bottle of Pinot Noir enjoyed will forever carry a piece of his spirit and the vision he dedicated his life to creating.
He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered.
