July 3, 2025 (Montefalco, Perugia) — Two days of tastings, discussions, and in-depth exploration offered an innovative and contemporary look at the wine heritage of the Montefalco and Spoleto territories. A Montefalco 2025, the event organized by the Consorzio Tutela Vini Montefalco, welcomed national and international press as well as industry professionals, successfully conveying the deep-rooted identity of a land devoted to wine.

Four stars for the 2021 vintage of Montefalco Sagrantino DOCG (an “excellent vintage”) and a score of 94/100 confirm a year that combined structure, body, and a vibrant acidity, thanks to a complex yet quality-favoring climate. Healthy, balanced grapes, excellent polyphenolic extraction, and a precise tannic structure backed by expressive fruitiness position 2021 as a vintage with great aging potential.

Spotlight also on Trebbiano Spoletino, increasingly emerging as a symbol of contemporary Umbria: a native variety with extraordinary vitality, confirming its growing central role in the region’s wine production. The Montefalco and Spoleto appellations helped create a dynamic and collective narrative of the region, showcasing the evolution of a territory in constant ferment.

Among the highlights, the victory of Giacomo Cenerini, a first-year Graphic Design student at the Academy of Fine Arts in Perugia, who won the Etichetta d’Autore (Artist Label) competition for Montefalco Sagrantino at A Montefalco 2025. His design—a falcon, symbol of the region, reinterpreted in a contemporary style—impressed the jury for its ability to abstractly capture the essence of a distinctive wine and a free, creative land.
“With this label, I tried to encapsulate the essence of the wine in a symbolic figure, reimagining the falcon in an abstract way. It was an experience that gave me confidence and confirmed I’m on the right path,” said Cenerini.

Another key moment was the Gran Premio del Sagrantino, the national competition promoted by AIS – Associazione Italiana Sommelier – which brought together 18 sommeliers from across Italy. The public final was won by Giulia Celeschi, a young sommelier who was awarded the scholarship offered by the Consorzio Tutela Vini Montefalco to deepen her knowledge of Montefalco wines. She was joined in the final by Andrea Peruzzi and Marco Curzi, in a competition that highlighted the technical skills, tasting sensitivity, and communication talents of the best professionals in the field.

The event also featured a large technical tasting of the new vintages from the Montefalco and Spoleto denominations, along with winery tours and key educational moments, such as the Masterclass led by Cristina Mercuri titled “Montefalco Today: A Contemporary Look at Tradition and Innovation.” This edition reaffirms Montefalco as a benchmark of Italian wine excellence.

“The 2021 vintage rating and the success of this edition of A Montefalco confirm how our region continues to express excellence and strong identity,” said Paolo Bartoloni, President of the Consorzio Tutela Vini Montefalco. “Montefalco Sagrantino and the wines from the Montefalco and Spoleto denominations increasingly stand out as true expressions of the most authentic and profound Umbria, thanks to the extraordinary work of producers and the deep connection to their land. We are proud of the level we’ve achieved and ready to continue this path of promotion with our eyes on the future.”
