Family Owned and Built to Stand Apart

South Bay Wine Group shows why independence still matters in wine through Castle Rock Winery, Kosmic Kitty® and Dressage Wines

August 19, 2026 (Rolling Hills, CA) — In a wine industry increasingly shaped by consolidation, acquisitions and large multi-brand portfolios, South Bay Wine Group is embracing something increasingly meaningful to consumers, retailers and distributors: being family owned and independent.

The family-owned company behind Castle Rock Winery, Kosmic Kitty® Wines and Dressage Wines believes ownership matters — not simply as a point of pride, but because of the freedom it provides to build distinctive brands, make long-term decisions and remain personally accountable for the wines that carry those names.

“Family ownership gives us the freedom to make decisions based on what we believe is right for the wine and the brand, rather than what fits a larger corporate portfolio,” said Greg Popovich, Founder and President of South Bay Wine Group and Castle Rock Winery. “We can take chances, react quickly and stay personally involved. Our reputation is attached to every bottle we sell.”

Independence in an Era of Consolidation

Over the past several decades, many familiar wine brands have been acquired, sold and incorporated into increasingly large portfolios.

Consolidation can bring tremendous resources and efficiencies. But it can also bring centralized decision-making, standardized production and mass-market approaches designed to work across numerous brands and consumers.

For an independent family wine company, the model can be very different.

Decisions can still be made around a table by people whose livelihoods, reputations and families are directly tied to the business.

“When you own the company, there isn’t a corporate parent somewhere else to blame,” Popovich said. “You’re responsible for the quality of the wine, how you treat your customers and distributors, and the reputation you’re building for the next generation. That keeps you pretty focused.”

More Than Three Decades of Quality and Value

Castle Rock Winery, founded in 1994, has grown from a small California wine company into a nationally distributed brand while remaining family owned and independent.

For more than three decades, Castle Rock has built its reputation around a straightforward philosophy: “Award-Winning Wines at Affordable Prices.”

The results speak for themselves.

Castle Rock wines have earned more than 100 Wine Enthusiast Best Buy designations across more than two decades and an unusually broad range of varietals and appellations.

Recent releases continue that tradition, including a 92-point Mendocino County Pinot Noir, 91-point Lodi Zinfandel and 90-point Monterey County Rosé of Pinot Noir, along with Best Buy recognition for Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Merlot and Pinot Noirs from California and Oregon.

“We’ve never believed consumers should have to choose between quality and value,” Popovich said. “That kind of track record doesn’t happen because of one great vintage or one lucky wine. It comes from staying focused year after year on putting genuinely good wine in the bottle at a price people can afford.”

Family Owned Doesn’t Have to Mean Traditional

That same independence has allowed South Bay Wine Group to take an entirely different approach with Kosmic Kitty® Wines, an unconventional brand created to reach a new generation of wine consumers.

Kosmic Kitty looks nothing like Castle Rock — deliberately.

“We don’t believe being family owned means every brand has to look or feel the same,” Popovich said. “Castle Rock, Kosmic Kitty and Dressage are completely different brands for different consumers. What they share is the family and independent company standing behind them.”

And the unconventional approach has been recognized for both what’s inside and outside the bottle. The Kosmic Kitty® Cabernet Sauvignon earned a Gold Medal for Package Design & Art Illustration at the 2026 Los Angeles International Wine Competition, while every Kosmic Kitty wine reviewed to date by Wine Enthusiast has received a Best Buy designation. The portfolio has also earned multiple 90-plus-point ratings, Gold Medals and Best of Class honors.

The brand is gaining traction in the marketplace as well. Kosmic Kitty has expanded distribution into more than 45 states, with a growing presence in high-end grocery chains and restaurant by-the-glass programs across the country — demonstrating that an independently created, family-owned brand can compete successfully on a national stage.

Kosmic Kitty shippers have carried the words “Proudly Family Owned,” a message retailers have sometimes picked up and highlighted on their own in-store display signage. South Bay Wine Group is now taking that message one step further, adding “FAMILY OWNED” directly to the front label of Kosmic Kitty bottles.

“Kosmic Kitty is supposed to be fun, but there’s real substance behind it,” Popovich said. “There’s a real family, a real wine company and more than 30 years in the wine business behind that cat. We thought consumers should know that.”

Dressage Wines: A Personal Connection

Dressage Wines represents another side of family ownership. Inspired by Adriana Popovich’s passion for horses and dressage, the brand was created around a world that is genuinely part of the family’s life.

“We weren’t sitting in a conference room trying to invent a lifestyle brand,” said Adriana Popovich, Director of Social Media for South Bay Wine Group. “We created something around a world we genuinely love and are part of.”

That connection includes Adriana’s longtime friend, Olympic Silver Medalist and Dressage Wines Brand Ambassador Sabine Schut-Kery.

“Dressage is built on balance, discipline and a commitment to doing things well over time,” said Schut-Kery. “Those same qualities are reflected in Dressage Wines and in the family behind the brand.”

The 2024 Dressage Monterey County Pinot Noir earned 95 points, Double Gold and Best of Class at the 2026 Sunset Wine Competition.

Family Ownership From the Sales Side

For Stephen Ross, Vice President and National Sales Manager, family ownership is something he has experienced from inside the company for more than a decade.

“After more than a decade with Castle Rock, I’ve seen firsthand what it means to work for a family-owned wine company,” Ross said. “There aren’t layers of corporate decision-making between us and the people who own the business. We can respond to our distributors and customers quickly, make decisions based on relationships rather than just numbers, and everyone here knows there’s a family personally invested in the outcome. That makes a difference in how we do business.”

Three Brands. One Family.

For South Bay Wine Group, family ownership isn’t about nostalgia. It’s about maintaining the freedom to create — and the responsibility to stand behind what you create.

Castle Rock reflects more than three decades of quality and value.

Dressage reflects a genuine family connection to the equestrian world.

Kosmic Kitty® reflects the freedom to take risks, have fun and reach a new generation of wine consumers.

Three brands that could hardly look more different on a shelf, yet all share something fundamental behind the label:

An independent family with a personal stake in every bottle.

“At the end of the day, being family owned means we’re building something we intend to be proud of tomorrow, not just something that works this quarter,” Popovich said. “That’s mattered to us for more than 30 years, and I think it’s beginning to matter more to consumers too.”

Different wines. Different consumers. One family-owned company.
