April 6, 2026 (St. Helena, CA) — Castello di Amorosa is proud to announce the appointment of Peter Velleno as Director of Winemaking. In this elevated role, Velleno will oversee all winemaking operations at the Tuscan-inspired castle, managing the production of the estate’s diverse and prestigious wine portfolio from grape to bottle.
Velleno’s journey with Castello di Amorosa began in 2008, shortly after the winery first opened its doors to the public. Over the past 18 years, he has been a cornerstone of the winemaking team, previously serving as Winemaker since 2014. A graduate of the University of California, Davis with a degree in Fermentation Science, Velleno brings a deep technical mastery and a passion for innovation to the cellar.
“Peter has demonstrated an extraordinary dedication to his craft and a profound understanding of our unique terroir,” said Georg Salzner, President of Castello di Amorosa. “His ability to craft wines at the highest expression of winemaking is unparalleled, especially evident in our stable of proprietary and single-vineyard Cabernets that consistently garner exceptional scores. We are confident that under his leadership, the Castello will continue to set the standard for excellence in Napa Valley.”
Velleno succeeds legendary winemaker Brooks Painter, who is transitioning into the role of Winemaker Emeritus and Consultant. In his new capacity, Velleno will work closely with Painter to ensure a seamless transfer of knowledge and to safeguard the stylistic legacy that has defined the winery for two decades.
“I am incredibly honored to take on this responsibility at such an iconic estate,” said Velleno. “I am grateful for the freedom I have here to pursue different styles and techniques. Innovation is encouraged at the Castello, and I look forward to continuing to push the boundaries of winemaking while honoring the traditions that make our wines so special”.
A fifth-generation San Franciscan, Velleno lives in Napa with his wife and two children. When not in the cellar, he is an avid outdoorsman who enjoys lacrosse, tennis, and exploring the natural beauty of the region.
