The Barbera d’Asti and Monferrato Wines Consortium at Vinitaly 2025

Signs a Strategic Agreement with the Pennsylvania Monopoly

Costigliole d’Asti, April 1st, 2025 – Great anticipation surrounds the participation of the Barbera d’Asti and Monferrato Wines Consortium at Vinitaly 2025, which will take place in Verona from April 6 to 9. The Consortium, present within Piemonte Land – Pavilion 10, arrives at the leading wine industry trade fair with a significant announcement: the signing of an agreement with the Pennsylvania monopoly. This partnership will lead to an exclusive press tour aimed at strengthening ties and fostering cultural and commercial exchange between the excellence of Monferrato and the American market.

Vitaliano Maccario

Vitaliano Maccario, President of the Consortium, highlighted the strategic importance of this initiative in a complex economic context, emphasizing the crucial role of the Consortium in promoting and enhancing the excellence of Monferrato: “The role of the Consortium has always been to protect, promote, and enhance the excellence and designations of our territory, especially in delicate moments like the one we are experiencing. We believe it is essential to continue investing in quality and international presence to ensure a strong and competitive future for our designations.”

Regarding the agreement with the Pennsylvania monopoly, Maccario added: “The introduction of new tariffs on wine imports to the United States is certainly prompting important reflections, although we are not particularly concerned. Thanks to their competitive pricing, the wines protected by our Consortium, particularly Barbera, are not expected to experience significant declines in sales, as the price increase will be minimal and we are confident that the market will easily absorb it. This factor, combined with the strong appreciation these wines enjoy among young consumers and wine lovers for their versatility and pairing potential, should help keep them highly competitive despite the new U.S. tariffs. We are therefore confident that they will continue to be in demand in the American market without the new tariff policies significantly impacting overall demand.

The press tour will be structured in two phases. The first part will take place directly in the Monferrato region and will include seminars dedicated to the protected designations, visits to local wineries, and in-depth explorations of the area’s production methods and traditions. The second part, scheduled during Vinitaly, will offer participants the opportunity to meet other local producers and further expand their knowledge of Piemonte’s wine production.

The Barbera d’Asti and Monferrato wines Consortium enthusiastically continues its mission of enhancing and promoting the 13 denominations that achieved remarkable results in 2024, strengthening their presence in both national and international markets through targeted strategies and innovative projects.

These successes are reflected in the region’s main denominations, including Monferrato DOC Nebbiolo, which has grown by 11%, surpassing 500,000 bottles.

Among the broader denominations, Piemonte DOC has increased by 3%, adding nearly one million more bottles compared to the previous year. In particular, Piemonte DOC Barbera maintains a strong position with over 16 million bottles (+0.4%), while Piemonte DOC Barbera Passito shows an impressive +19.36%, exceeding 1.1 million bottles. Also noteworthy is the success of the dual-varietal wine, a true innovation in the production regulations: Piemonte DOC Barbera-Nebbiolo, which has recorded an exceptional +359%, surpassing 500,000 bottles.

On the white wine front, Piemonte DOC Chardonnay has set an absolute record, growing by 7.6% to reach 2,174,000 bottles, confirming its increasing appeal among consumers. Ruchè di Castagnole Monferrato DOCG remains stable above one million bottles (+1.6%), while Terre Alfieri DOCG, though still with limited numbers, has grown by 8%, a promising sign for the future.

These results reflect the success of the initiatives carried out in 2024, such as the first edition of the Barbera D’Asti Wine Festival, which celebrated the essence of Barbera with an innovative and engaging format. International events like the Barbera d’Asti Fish Festival in Oslo and Monferrato Identity in the Netherlands and Belgium have strengthened the Consorzio’s presence in foreign markets, while the consolidation of its presence in the United States and Canada has further boosted exports.

In 2025, the Consorzio Barbera d’Asti e Vini del Monferrato will be even more committed to promoting the region and its denominations through a series of events aimed at making Barbera d’Asti an accessible, youthful wine suitable for multiple consumption occasions.

Events such as Anteprima Ruchè, participation in industry fairs like Vinitaly in Verona from April 6 to 9, and numerous other initiatives will provide unique opportunities to discover these extraordinary wines up close. This exciting project aims to engage younger generations with Monferrato’s winemaking culture through innovative formats such as experiential events in Italy and abroad, social media campaigns, local events, and workshops. The goal is to present Barbera d’Asti as a contemporary symbol of quality, tradition, and enjoyment.

The participation in Vinitaly 2025 represents not only a unique opportunity for the Barbera d’Asti and Monferrato wines Consortium to strengthen relationships with international partners but also a chance to enhance and promote the quality and tradition of Monferrato wines, both in Italy and abroad.
