Maremma Toscana DOC Wines Once Again Center Stage at Prowein 2023

The Consorzio Tutela Vini della Maremma Toscana will be at Düsseldorf again this year to meet buyers and wine professionals from around the globe

Grosseto, March 2023 – March 19 to 21, the Consorzio Tutela Vini della Maremma Toscana returns to Germany for Prowein, the leading international trade show focused on wine and spirits. “A not-to-be-missed opportunity. Compared to last year, our export share is up a good 40% and Germany is one of our top markets. This is a crucial event for us because it allows us to promote the quality and value of our wines and our territory before an international audience, continuing the growth journey that put us in the lead in recent years,” remarked Francesco Mazzei, President of the Consorzio Tutela Vini Maremma Toscana on the eve of the show’s opening.

This is robust growth, clearly demonstrated by the declaration data for the 2022 harvest. “The number of wineries attributing their production to the DOC Maremma Toscana for the first time continues to increase, so much so that in 2022 we totaled nearly 17,400,000 kilograms of grapes harvested in the DOC, compared to just under 12,800,000 from the previous harvest,” explained Luca Pollini, director of the Consorzio Tutela Vini della Maremma Toscana.

Lead player in this leap forward is still Vermentino, which rose from approx. 3,370,000 kg of grapes declared in the 2020 harvest to 3,715,000 in 2021, and more than 4,330,000 kg in the 2022 harvest. So much so that the Vermentino DOC Maremma Toscana now represents 34% of the entire quantity of grapes declared in the DOC Maremma Toscana for the last harvest.

Not limited to the Appellation’s symbol wine, this expansion also includes many other varietals, like Ciliegiolo, Ansonica, Viognier and Syrah, in a general context of double-digit increases for all the varieties of wine.

Coming back to participation in the German trade show, the Consorzio stand will be in the Tuscan area – Hall 16 Stand B71. There will be about 30 very different wines on display at the Consorzio stand – with the main focus on Vermentino and Ansonica among the whites, Ciliegiolo and Sangiovese among the native reds and rosés, and the red blends with international and/or traditional varieties.

The Consorzio stand will also host a group of vintners on hand with the producers: Argentaia, Azienda Guido F. Fendi, Bastianich-La Mozza, Cantina I Vini di Maremma, La Chimera d’Albegna, Tenuta del Fontino Biodynamic Wine-Farm.

“The varied array of wines is one of the strengths of our Appellation,” stated President Mazzei. “In a comparison between the first two months of 2023 vs 2022, 2023 began with a 49% increase, with 10,316 hl bottled. A positive sign that compensates for 2022 breaking even with the previous year because of a delay in bottling due to difficulty procuring raw materials.”

“Our goal is to maintain double-digit growth. We are engaged on various fronts, with different events and projects to promote our wines and territory, starting with a focus on native varietals, like Vermentino and Ciliegiolo, that are proving to be quite rewarding. In addition, after significant efforts on our part with the Ministry, we are nearing the conclusion of the process to amend the Vermentino production standards and specifications, with the introduction of Vermentino Superiore, already approved by the National Wine Commission, which we hope will take effect by April. This is a further opportunity for growth, also qualitative, for the DOC,” concluded Mazzei.
