February 1st – Stony Run Winery recently received recognition on the world stage at the 2022 San Francisco International Wine Competition (SFIWC), one of the largest and longest running wine competitions in the world. Stony Run’s Estate Viognier won gold while their Estate Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc, and Chardonnay Reserve won silver medals.

The annual competition is sponsored by the Tasting Alliance where more than 30 judges gathered in San Francisco for three full days in November to evaluate and score approximately 3,000 wines from around the world. The entry list reads like a who’s who in the wine world with submissions from notable wineries such as Barefoot, Beringers, Dark Horse, Francis Ford Copolla, J. Lohr and Kim Crawford among others.

Stony Run Wines are all estate grown in the Lehigh Valley American Viticultural Area (AVA) in the foothills of the Blue Mountains near Kempton. An AVA designation is awarded by the The Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) to areas with unique viticultural capabilities after examining the climate, soils and terroir. According to the Pennsylvania Wine Association, this designation puts the Lehigh Valley on the same footing as more recognizable AVA’s such as Napa Valley, Willamette Valley and the Finger Lakes Region.

According to Stony Run’s winegrower, Larry Shrawder, “ Although Pennsylvania has historically been known for its sweet Concord based wines, it is increasingly emerging as a world class dry European style wine producing region as evidenced by the success of these wines, among others, in international competition.”

Stony Run Winery 150 Independent Rd. Breinigsville, PA is inviting the public to taste these award winners during a weekend celebration Saturday, February 18, 12-7 PM and Sunday, February 19, 12-5 PM. Charcuterie and cheese boards will be available to complement the wines. Reservations for groups of six or more are recommended. Please contact the winery at 610-398-7231 or email info@stonyrunwinery.com to reserve. To learn about our winery, special events and featured wines please visit https://www.stonyrunwinery.com/.
