The Spanish family wine estate Compañía Vinícola del Norte de España (CVNE) has announced today its first partnership with La Place de Bordeaux to sell its exclusive wine, Real de Asua 2019.

Over 140 years of history in Rioja concentrated into one single 100% Tempranillo wine inspired by a unique terroir from a specific plot.

The first bottles will be available on the market starting September, 21st.

September 20th – Legendary Rioja wine producer CVNE will make its debut on La Place de Bordeaux with Real de Asua 2019 which has recently received accolades from international wine critics. Scores hovered around 96-97, with critics described it as “a full-bodied, ripe and delicious red” (James Suckling), “highlighting the potential of this 2.37ha plot of 30 year old Tempranillo vines sat at a windy 550m altitude in Villalba” (Jane Anson).

Luis Gutierrez from Wine Advocate also commented: “Very impressive. It has the naked essence of Rioja without the layers and layers of oak, now from a single vineyard where they want freshness and a lush but floral and delicate profile you have to drink effortlessly. Superb.”

Victor Urrutia (5th Generation, CVNE) explained : “Real de Asua holds a special place in our hearts alongside the legendary Gran Reservas of IMPERIAL and CONTINO, the first single-vineyard estate in Spain with nearly 50 years of history in our family. When we decided to launch this new great Rioja wine in 1994, we did not imagine that Real de Asua would so quickly become an emblem of Rioja Alta, just like the 1st Classified Growths of the Médoc, which today represent the quintessence of Bordeaux. It was therefore only natural, after numerous discussions with these top châteaux, that we join them in the Place de Bordeaux.”

REAL DE ASUA 2019, THE ESSENCE OF RIOJA

Tribute to the ancestors and to Rioja region

Real de Asua has a particular place in the CVNE wines. This wine was created in 1994 by the 5th generation of the family as a tribute to their great-grandfathers, the two brothers, Eusebio and Raimundo Real de Asúa, who founded CVNE in 1879 and to the Rioja region, particularly the cities of Bilbao and Haro that saw them and the Company flourish.

Issued from Carromaza, a unique place

Not being born into vineyards belonging to the family, the Real de Asúa bought land and planted it to vines and they also bought vineyards whenever they could. Starting in the 1950s, the family set its sights on the rugged village of Villalba, in the foothills of the Sierra high above Haro. In the 90s, with the first signs of global warming, they realized that this place had something special: the nature and the ecosystem are in perfect harmony with the vineyards, surrounded by the forest above. Importantly, the vines and their grapes stood out, with an exceptional taste. Smaller grapes, with a more concentrated juice and above all, a freshness that was quintessentially Rioja Alta. They began to isolate several plots: there was something incredible about their freshness, their aromatic definition and their purity. From 1994, they decided to make a unique wine.

After years of avant-garde experiments with regards to the most natural work as possible in the vineyards and in the winemaking approach to preserve the complexity and deliver the most exact reflection of this village, in the latest harvests, they decided to focus on one specific terroir in Villalba: Carromaza. Today, Real de Asúa is exclusively made from this vineyard in order to perfectly express what this land, this particular plot, can produce, as the epitome of this village’s typicity: fresh and complex, masculine and feminine.

The Quintessence of Rioja Alta

This is a cherry-colored, dark wine. The aromatic intensity delivers a widerange of aromas with some fruits from the forest, blueberries and gooseberries, licorice and aromas from the ageing in french oak barrels, such as clove, smoked or roasted flavors, toffees. Complex and floral. Light tannins are perfectly balanced with the unctuousness of the wine. A pure reflection of what Rioja Alta is all about.
