Dalla Terra Winery Direct® Adds Sicilian Producer Sallier de la Tour

(January 18, 2022; Napa, Calif.) — Dalla Terra Winery Direct® announced today that Sicilian winery Tenuta Sallier de La Tour has joined its portfolio of family-owned Italian estates. The historic and eponymous estate has been practicing viticulture in the Monreale DOC winegrowing area near Palermo since the 19th century. Today the winery produces a range of wines based on native Sicilian varieties such as Nero d’Avola and Inzolia, as well as Syrah, which has a long history of cultivation on the island and is emerging as an icon of the DOC. Since 2008, Sallier de La Tour has been managed by Tasca d’Almerita, one of the oldest and most esteemed winemaking families in Sicily, currently led by 8th generation owner Alberto Tasca. Sallier de La Tour joins three other Tasca d’Almerita estates in the Dalla Terra portfolio: Tenuta Tascante, Tenuta Whitaker and Tenuta Capofaro. Dalla Terra will be the winery’s sole USA agent.

“Sallier de La Tour produces authentic and sincere wines of exceptional quality and value,” says president of Dalla Terra, Scott Ades. “We are excited and honored to represent these wines in the US market and to strengthen our existing partnership with the Tasca family.”

The Sallier de La Tour estate encompasses 200 acres, 120 under organically farmed vines with the other 80 acres dedicated to biodiversity-preserving streams, lakes, pastures and olive groves. Like all the Tasca d’Almerita estates, Sallier de La Tour is managed according to SOStain, Tasca d’Almerita’s pioneering sustainability program that requires third-party certification of the estate’s impact on air, water, soil, and surrounding territory, as well as environmental, economic and social sustainability.

History

The estate has belonged to the Sallier de La Tour family, Princes of Camporeale, since the mid-nineteenth century. They built the La Monaca winery, which is still in use today, in 1909, its name inspired by the highest hill found on the property. In the 1940s, Paolo Sallier de La Tour increased the family’s interest in viticulture with a particular focus on native varieties Nero d’Avola and Inzolia. In 1956, Paolo married Costanza Tasca d’Almerita, joining the two noble families together. Paolo’s son Filiberto Sallier de La Tour began cultivating Syrah at the property and launched the first commercially produced wines under the family’s name in the early 2000s.

In 2008, Filiberto approached his cousin, Alberto Tasca, with the idea of joining Sallier de La Tour with the renowned Tasca d’Almerita family of wineries. Having long been impressed with his cousin’s passion and the family’s deep ties to their land, Alberto agreed, and the two families started a new chapter in the estate’s history. Today, the Estate is managed by Costanza Chirivino, a member of the Sallier de La Tour family and part of the next generation of young, ambitious viticultural custodians in the Monreale area, with the support from the Tasca d’Almerita team.

“Costanza’s energy and enthusiasm for her family’s legacy is infectious, as is her knowledge of and affinity for the region,” adds Ades.
