Sonoma’s Premier Wine Growing and Winemaking Family, the Sangiacomo Family, celebrates 20 years of harvesting Roberts Road Vineyard

Sonoma, CA, December 17, 2019 – Courageously pioneering into uncharted territory, this year marks the twenty year milestone for the Sangiacomo Family’s successful Roberts Road Vineyard. Previously cultivated for hay and corn and spending the morning under fog from nearby Bodega Bay, the area was unproven when it came to fruit with many cautioning that the site was too cool for grape growing. Despite all evidence to the contrary, the Sangiacomo’s forged forward; planting Chardonnay and Pinot Noir and becoming pioneers in a region that now holds a stellar reputation. Certified sustainable and the source of grapes for more than thirty wineries, Roberts Road is responsible for producing over twenty vineyard designates, with 55 wines achieving 90+ ratings over the years.

Located at the base of Sonoma Mountain, in the northern part of the famed Petaluma Gap appellation, Roberts Road Vineyard has developed some of the most prestigious grapes that the Sangiacomo family cultivates. Needing no soil amendment when acquired, the land is very well-drained with silty gravel. Highly unusual in that it has two watersheds, the southern end of Roberts Road Vineyard drains to the San Pablo Bay while the northern section drains to the Russian River. With Copeland Creek having meandered through the area for over a century, the cobblestone soil is naturally perfect for wine grapes.

With fog covering the vineyard until mid-day, the growing season is long and gradual; testing the patience and strengthening the tenacity of grape growers. The fruit ripens slowly; developing deep flavors and making for rare wines with natural acidity and suppleness. Wines made from these grapes are Burgundian in style, rich and delicate with a velvety mouthfeel. Notable wineries producing from the Sangiacomo Family’s Roberts Road Vineyard include Adobe Road, Anaba, Ancillary, Bruliam, Noria, La Follette, Neyers, Saxon Brown, Sojourn and Westwood.

“Roberts Road is a special vineyard for our family. A farmer’s dream with its rocky, extremely well drained soils,” says Steve Sangiacomo. “In its 20th year, tucked in the heart of the Petaluma Gap, we marvel at the outstanding wines it continues to produce. We thank all of the wineries that have been sourcing fruit from the vineyard for many years and look forward to each vintage to come.”

Evolving the family business from farming to now both growing wine grapes and making wine, are third generation siblings Steve and Mike Sangiacomo, and Mia Pucci. Born from the pursuit of crafting the finest wines from their collection of vineyards, the third generation of the Sangiacomo family launched their namesake label last year. Under their own label, the Sangiacomo family has produced a 2016 Roberts Road Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir, earning 94 points from The Wine Advocate, 92 points from Wine Enthusiast, and 90 points from Wine Spectator. Of the Roberts Road Vineyard Pinot Noir, Wine Enthusiast described it as “ultimately a full-bodied, ripe and robust wine that lingers on a baking spice note… earthy blueberry and clove tones give way to a juicy core of soft, integrated fruit”. When honoring it as the “Wine of the Week”, The Press Democrat called it a “wild child” with a “stampede of fruit running through it”.  Wine Spectator commended the varietal for its “concentrated red currant flavors and notes of dried mint and sage”. The family also recently released the 2017 Roberts Road Vineyard Chardonnay, which earned 93 points from Wine Enthusiast, and a 2017 Roberts Road Vineyard Pinot Noir, which earned 94 points from Wine Enthusiast and was once again recognized as The Press Democrat’s “Wine of the Week”.

“In addition to starting with great fruit, what also contributes to the beauty of this wine, from a winemaking standpoint, is that I ferment and age each of the three clones individually, and treat each ferment slightly different,” Sangiacomo Family Wines winemaker James MacPhail, said. “Great Pinot Noir is all about layers – both aromatically and on the palate – so the more you can introduce layers through clonal selection and winemaking, all these attributes contribute to the final wine and its deliciousness and seriousness. From a consumer experience point of view, this wine needs to pose more questions than answers!”

A multi-generational business, the Sangiacomo family entered the wine industry as premium grape growers over half a century ago, and still today are harvesting their fruit for more than 50 prestigious wine labels. Prioritizing sustainability and becoming a driving force in the region’s sustainability programs, with their efforts highlighted by Sonoma County’s achievement of becoming a 100% certified sustainable wine region – the first in the nation, the Sangiacomo family (board members of Sonoma County Winegrowers and California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance) ensures that their agricultural processes are environmentally sound, socially responsible and economically viable. Having earned a 100% sustainable certification for all 1600 acres of their vineyards in 2015, the family implements thoughtful farming practices to conserve natural resources and invests in long term wellness of their employees. Each Sangiacomo wine showcases a love for Sonoma County, telling a story of beloved vineyards, favorable terroir, clonal selections, and meticulously harvested fruit.
