Cristina Forner, Owner of Marqués de Cáceres, Invests in Winery in Ribera Del Duero, Bodegas Finca la Capilla

La Capilla Crianza 2015 Arrives in the United States this Month

La CapillaNEW YORK, October 28, 2019 – Founded in 1970 by fourth generation wine producer Enrique Forner, renowned winery Marqués de Cáceres continues to expand and strengthen its position as a leading Spanish wine producer under the management of his daughter Cristina Forner. The Marqués de Cáceres portfolio now comprises wines from the prestigious La Rioja, Rueda, Penedès, Rias Baixas, and through the acquisition of Bodegas Finca La Capilla in March 2019, Ribera del Duero wine regions. Backed by the Forner family’s experience developed in its Grand Cru Classé château in Bordeaux, and Bodegas Rioja and Rueda, the new project marks the producer’s entry into one of the most important Spanish Denominations of Origin (DOs). The first release – La Capilla Crianza 2015 – is available in the United States this month, imported by Marqués de Cáceres’ longtime partner, Vineyard Brands.

In the acquisition, Marqués de Cáceres has retained as winemaker Ribera del Duero terroir specialist Rodrigo Miñón, whose father Juan Miñón originally founded the winery as Bodegas Robeal in 1988.  The property encompasses several plots in a single vineyard of about 125 acres, distributed between La Horra, Anguix, and Roa, an area of recognized prestige within the denomination, to which Tempranillo, known as Tinta del País in Ribera del Duero, is perfectly suited. Sitting at an altitude of 800 meters, severely harsh and cold winters and very hot and dry summers present extreme conditions. The vineyard is equipped with anti-freeze windmills for protection against frost, and the vine-plants are grafted by hand. The diversity of soil with a predominance of poor, age-old soils from the Tertiary period and very low levels of organic substance, is ideal for airing and drainage. The alternating layers of silty sands and whitish limestone deliver wines with elegance and finesse.

“Marqués de Cáceres opened Bodegas Finca La Capilla as part of a global strategy to strengthen our production and international distribution ahead of our 50th anniversary in 2020,” says Cristina Forner, president and owner of Marqués de Cáceres. “This exciting venture enables us to form part of one of Spain’s benchmark DOs with wines that are structured, rich and elegant in style, and with a brand of our own. We are privileged to have a winemaker whose family planted many of the estate’s vineyards, who knows every single plot and parcel of vines. La Capilla Crianza is characteristic of its origins and an area of wonderful potential.”

La Capilla Crianza 2015 ($32.99 SRP)

Made from 100% Tinta del País exclusively sourced from Bodegas Finca La Capilla’s own vineyards surrounding the winery; aged 12 months in new and second use, fine grain French oak barrels and new and second use American oak barrels.

A vivid, deep color, with an intense bouquet of fresh fruit wrapped in refined oak that is well integrated without overshadowing the character of the Tempranillo grapes grown in the Ribera del Duero. Fresh and lively on the palate, with elegant complexity, creamy sensations, and refined toasted notes. Smooth but dense, mouth-filling tannins.  Balanced for immediate consumption with the potential to develop in-bottle for several years.

About Marqués de Cáceres

Founded by fourth generation wine producer Enrique Forner in 1970, Marqués de Cáceres is a leading Spanish winery based in Rioja Alta, in the heart of La Rioja DO. After fleeing the Spanish Civil War and living in France with his family for over 30 years, Forner returned to Spain to establish a bodega in the village of Cenicero, where he introduced Rioja to French winemaking techniques including the system of estate-bottling, vineyard control, grape selection, cold production, and in-bottle refinement. Now helmed by Forner’s daughter Cristina, Marqués de Cáceres has expanded to include bodegas in Rueda and Ribera del Duero, with additional varietals hailing from Penedès and Rias Baixas. Marqués de Cáceres exports to over 140 countries while expanding wine tourism in Cenicero with its La Rioja winery tours.
