July 1, 2019 – During July Prima Materia Winery in Oakland will be releasing several unusual wines including their estate bottled Aglianico and Sagrantino, taking over Vintage Berkeley wine shop for a night, and hosting and cooking for “The Wines of the Odyssey” wine dinner at our Tremescal Alley tasting room.

Wine releases: Prima Materia grows its own grapes in the Kelsey Bench AVA of Lake County, and is focused on Italian cultivars ranging from Sangiovese and Barbera to Refosco and Negroamaro. Former chef and winemaker/owner Pietro Buttitta planted most of these grapes himself and has worked the vineyard for the last 11 years.

Prima Materia is releasing their first estate bottled Sagrantino. It is the product of a 1600-mile road trip to pick up the vines 2012 that then took over 7 years to see the light of day along with a few small calamities along the way.

The Aglianico was planted in 2003 and has evolved into our signature varietal along with Barbera and Sangiovese. Expect deep red and black fruits, ample structure and spice with great aging ability.

Events: On July 26th Prima Materia will be taking over Vintage Berkeley wine store at Vine and Shattuck. Not only will Pietro bring limited releases such as his Mourvèdre, Sangiovese Bianco, and Negroamaro, but he will also be cooking up culinary accompaniments.

Last week Prima Materia hosted and cooked for a 25-seat wine dinner accompanied with historical presentations of ancient winemaking and varietals with The Ancient Wine Guys. On August 9th they will be hosting another evening with “The Wines of the Odyssey” and sampling bottles from each location Odysseus visited on his journey. Prima Materia will again create the food in addition to a few featured wines. A couple additional seats will be available for press members to attend – please rsvp if interested.
