Monterey County Vintners & Growers Association (MCVGA) Announces the 2024 Wine Grape Harvest

Monterey County, CA – August 19, 2024 – The Monterey County Vintners & Growers Association (MCVGA) is elated to proclaim the beginning of the 2024 wine grape harvest. This year’s harvest assures high quality fruit due to thorough vineyard management and a very wet winter.

Wine grapes are a perennial crop and were less impacted by the increased rain production from this past year. As a result, wine grapes are one of Monterey County’s top crops, ranking fifth in production value for 2023.

“We are expecting exceptional quality for the 2024 vintage across all varietals and a compact and quick harvest.” said Silvano Botta, Board President of MCVGA and Regional Director, Central Coast Vineyards for Constellation Brands.

The 2024 wine grape harvest will begin in August, depending on the wine varietal. Typically, Monterey County’s top three white wine varietals; Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, then Pinot Gris will be among the first to be picked. Followed by Monterey County’s top red wine varietals; Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot will follow in September.

“We are tremendously optimistic about the high-quality fruit this harvest. We are harvesting earlier this year compared to 2023. It will be a great vintage, we have avoided heat spikes and had good rainfall this year.” said Russel Joyce, Owner and Winemaker of Joyce Wine Company.

To celebrate the harvest season, MCVGA invites the public to take part in the upcoming Winemakers’ Celebration on Saturday, August 24, 2024, in Carmel-by-the-Sea. Celebrate the upcoming harvest with winemakers and growers from one of the world’s premier wine regions. This event offers guests the opportunity to experience incredible wines and culinary delights from renowned chefs and local food purveyors who will highlight their craft.
