Introducing Dr. Konstantin Frank’s Dry Rosé of Saperavi

A Modern Take on an Ancient Georgian Variety

Hammondsport, NY, June 2024 – Dr. Konstantin Frank Winery is thrilled to unveil its latest creation, the Dr. Konstantin Frank 2023 Dry Rosé of Saperavi (SRP, $24.99). This exceptional rosé, available exclusively from the winery, marks the family’s inaugural venture into crafting a rosé from the storied Saperavi grape.

The Allure of Saperavi

Saperavi, an ancient grape variety native to Georgia, is notable for its deep, dark hue and robust flavor profile. The name “Saperavi” translates to “dye” or “paint” in Georgian, reflecting its intensely pigmented juice—a unique characteristic among black grape varieties. While this teinturier grape (known for its colored flesh and juice) has been used in winemaking for centuries, Dr. Konstantin Frank was the first to introduce it to the Finger Lakes in the early 1960s.

Recently, Saperavi wines have seen a surge in popularity. Meaghan Frank, Vice President and fourth-generation family member managing the winery, partially attributes this to the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) recently recognizing the variety. “Previously, wineries were unable to label their wines as ‘Saperavi’ despite being 100% made from the grape, but this change has allowed for better brand recognition and increased demand for this variety.”

Saperavi thrives in diverse climates, from Australia to Japan. Here in the Finger Lakes, it has found an ideal home where its adaptability and distinctive characteristics flourish in the cooler climate.

The Wine

Crafted from 100% Saperavi grapes sourced from Pendleton Farms on Canandaigua Lake, the Dr. Konstantin Frank 2023 Dry Rosé of Saperavi is a true expression of this unique grape. Assistant winemaker Sam Pendleton and his family carefully harvested these grapes as a purposeful pick at the optimal acidity level for rosé, which is different from harvesting with the goal of making red wine.

“Our exploration of Saperavi extends beyond this rosé,” commented Frank. “We’ve produced a more traditional Saperavi for years, and we’re now working on a traditional method sparkling Saperavi, which is set for release in the future. Observing the innovative Saperavi wines emerging from Georgia has been enlightening, and we are excited to contribute to this global renaissance.”

The Dr. Konstantin Frank 2023 Dry Rosé of Saperavi captivates the senses with a vibrant bouquet of ripe berries and red cherries. The nose is adorned with fragrant lavender and subtle tea leaf undertones, creating a complex aromatic profile. On the palate, the wine presents a harmonious balance of candied fruit and refreshing acidity with a rich, robust character. The long, elegant finish leaves a lasting impression of summer berries and delicate florals.
