Organic Wine-Growing and Climate Change: Suavia Winery Takes Stock of the First 10 Years of Organic Management of Its Vineyards and the Theme of Environmental Protection

September 14th 2023, Soave (VR) – For many years Suavia, a wine jewel located in the area of Soave Classico wine in the province of Verona, has been committed to the management of wine production that is concentrating on the organic. Now, after more than 10 years of commitment which led to obtaining organic certification in 2019, the winery takes stock of the work it has carried out and the results it has obtained, also in light of the environmental upheavals that are also affecting the world of wine.

“We undertook this path with great conviction and with the aim of continuing along it – say Alessandra and Meri Tessari, co-owners of Suavia – We believe that an organic approach, not only to wine-growing but to agriculture in general, is the only alternative to adopt in order to continue developing the primary sector in the future, in light of the consequences brought about by climate change. Organic wine-growing protects the soil and the environment we work in every day, it allows us to enjoy the benefits of healthy food for everyone, to guarantee an income for the coming generations, making it possible for the sector to progress. Continuing along this path is a duty and it is important that the political class also makes its mark in this direction.”

The good practices that Suavia implements aim at protecting the landscape and the environment of Soave as much as possible and they include grassing, and not using synthetic products in the vineyard but treatments that are exclusively of an organic origin. By using very mature compost there is a natural enrichment of the soil which is thus able to regenerate, counteracting any beginning of desertification. Thanks to the sponge effect which allows water to be retained and the soil to be more compact, the risks of drought are removed as well as the danger of erosion.

“In addition to these fundamental advantages which fall on a systemic level, we have noticed how our production is also reaping significant benefits. – explains the enologist and co-owner Valentina Tessari – We work with plants that have acquired greater resistance and which produce smaller berries and bunches, guaranteeing a greater concentration of aromatic substances on the pulp and skin. This allows the vines we grow, especially Garganega and Trebbiano, to express their terroir of origin to the maximum in the glass. The I Luoghi line, three crus that we will officially present in September, will celebrate this bond which is enhanced by means of the organic approach.”

An approach which, along with numerous positive aspects, brings with it some great difficulties for the company, from the high economic costs to the strong commitment from the point of view of the staff who find themselves in a hilly area. A kind of agriculture that becomes heroic and includes treatments that are often limited and must be carried out in the dark.

“What convinced us to continue along this path are also the ways in which end consumers are welcoming us, with a growing sensitivity to the topic and with an inclination to wanting to get to know the entire supply chain and, consequently, to spending larger sums for a product of high quality – say Alessandra, Meri and Valentina Tessari – This curiosity that we find in the public excites us, and becomes an even greater driving force in our determination to continue along this path”.
