June 1st – Some awards mean more than others. Winning a Platinum Medal for our 2020 Tioja at the TEXSOM Awards sure means a lot. Three big reasons are:
- This recognition comes for one of our beloved flagship wines that we have produced every year since the 2014 vintage.
- We are marking our 11th anniversary this month, and this notable award is a cherry on top of a sweet celebration.
- TEXSOM is one of the most prestigious wine competitions in the world.
The name Tioja is a nod to a Texas wine made in the style of a Spanish Rioja wine. We knew the 2020 vintage was going to be something special because the Tempranillo fruit we harvested from Lampasas County in the northern Hill Country was exceptional. We blended 94% Tempranillo with 6% Garnacha grapes to create our signature red wine.
The 2020 Tioja absolutely sings, and the judges agree. It has opulent aromas of plum, black cherry, earth, and smoke. It is rich and intense with black cherry, dried fig, and cedar flavors with a plum finish. It is delicious paired with roast pork shoulder.
More than 2,300 wines representing 25 countries and 19 US states were entered into the TEXSOM Awards this year. A team of 42 renowned tastemakers from across the country blind-tasted and judged each of the entries. After sipping and swirling all 2,300 wines, the judges awarded 76 Platinum medals, 233 Gold medals, 676 Silver medals, and 673 Bronze medals. Wines receiving Platinum medals demonstrate quality and unique character that are exceptional even amongst their medal-winning peers.
