New Mexico Wine Joins Vinexpo 2023

Trade Association brings New Mexico Wines to New York Audience & Beyond

March 6th – ALBUQUERQUE – New Mexico Wine and Grape Growers Association, the trade association representing the state’s wine industry, will attend Vinexpo 2023 at New York’s Javits Center for the first time March 8-9, 2023. A variety of New Mexican wines will be poured from producers located throughout the Land of Enchantment, featuring traditional method bubblies from Gruet Winery in addition to many unexpected offerings for what’s likely to be many wine professionals first glimpse into New Mexico’s grape and wine diversity.

New Mexico is the original grape growing region in the United States, its vineyards first planted in 1629 along the Rio Grande River. With nearly 400 years of continuous wine production, it’s survived and persevered through floods, droughts, wars, economic depression, and Prohibition; yet most wine consumers and seasoned wine professionals have little knowledge or experience with New Mexico wines. The goal of attending Vinexpo 2023 is to raise awareness for this historic wine growing region.

New Mexico offers some unique advantages for grape growers that the wine industry just beginning to admire. High elevation vineyards offer a dry climate minimizing chemical interventions while warm days and cool high-desert nights, coupled with intense UV exposure, allow for full ripening of both vinifera and hybrid varieties. European immigrants in the early 1970s planted a plethora of Italian, French, and Spanish varieties including aglianico, arneis, barbera, chenin blanc, malvasia, nebbiolo, pinot meunier, and tempranillo which share equal shelf space with cabernet, merlot, pinot noir and chardonnay.

New Mexico Wine will feature iconic sparkling producer Gruet Winery, the most well-known New Mexico wine brand, with exports to all 50 states and to 13 countries. Also featured will be Noisy Water Winery, one of the fastest growing wineries in the state. Additional artisan producers on offer will be Amaro, Luna Rossa, Sheehan, Vivác, and others tba.

Jasper Riddle, Owner of Noisy Water Winery, shared his opinion on the value of attending Vinexpo in 2022 stating that, “Vinexpo is a great opportunity to bring exposure to the quality wines and the unique story that New Mexico has to offer. The wine market has recently become more curious of emerging US markets, and we hope to be one of the new presenters people are excited to taste and learn about.” (see https://www.winebusiness.com/news/link/256844)
