Hammer prices at iDealwine, the world’s leading online wine auctioneer reached new heights with a bottle of 2006 Domaine Leroy Musigny Grand Cru selling for €28,244. This is not the first time the renowned Burgundy estate has surpassed the legendary Domaine de la Romanée-Conti at auction, making it the most sought-after wine in the world.
September 17th – Smashing the previous record, a bottle of 2006 Musigny from Domaine Leroy has become the most expensive bottle of wine ever auctioned in iDealwine’s 20-year history. The previous record was set just months ago in 2020, for a 2001 Musigny from Leroy, which sold for €17,499. This record has now been beaten by the same wine, but in the 2006 vintage, for a final hammer price of €28,244. With five people engaged in a bidding war, the battle was won by a wine connoisseur based in the UK.
For reference, the highest hammer price on iDealwine for a single bottle of DRC was €17,146, for a 2000 vintage Romanée-Conti from Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, sold in 2017.
Using Winedex, iDealwine’s wine authentication and traceability app, the bottle is equipped with a tamper-proof RFID tag, which contains information on the bottle’s provenance and certification, all stored in blockchain. Cyrille Jomand, CEO of iDealwine, said: “The fact that this record was set in the height of summer (traditionally a quiet time in wine auctions) reinforces iDealwine’s leading global position in online wine auctions. Wine lovers from all over the world can find rare wines at any time on iDealwine.”
Behind the record price – Lalou Bize-Leroy, Burgundy’s finest.
The success of Domaine Leroy’s wines is not new, neither is that of its Côte de Beaune sister vineyard, Domaine d’Auvenay. Even though the latter produces wines from less prestigious appellations, it has also experienced significant price increases over the last ten years, intensifying further in recent months. For example, a “simple” Burgundy Aligoté Sous Chatelet 2013 sold for €2,996 a bottle in August (+202%), probably making it the most expensive Aligoté in the world. Likewise, its 2004 Gevrey Chambertin recently sold for €4,175 (August 2021).
Lalou Bize-Leroy, formerly of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, is widely considered one of the world’s greatest winemakers and a pioneer in the field biodynamics. Her eponymous estate covers 22 hectares and includes nine Grands Crus and eight Premiers Crus. Beginning in 1988 and slowly purchasing various parcels (from Fomaine Charles Noellat and Philippe Rémy for example). Micro-level production (almost all the Grand Cru and Premier Cru

parcels are less than one hectare in size and yields are severely limited) makes Leroy’s wines super rare, among the hardest to find, and most sought-after in the world.
Classified Grand Cru, the Musigny appellation is renowned for silky, elegant wine, on par with Romanée-Conti, the most illustrious of all Burgundy appellations. The Musigny appellation itself is tiny, less than 10 hectares. Domaine Leroy owns just 0.27 hectares of it (0.67 acres). These factors all contribute to the rarity of Leroy’s Musigny, with only two or three bottles traded each year on iDealwine.
iDealwine is delighted to announce a 2005 Leroy Musigny will brought to auction in October 2021.
