Capriva del Friuli, Italy, September 9, 2021 – Attems, the historical wine estate from Friuli Venezia Giulia, in the NE of Italy, is pleased to announce the beginning of the harvest operations, which this year show potential for an excellent 2021 vintage.
After a rainy winter with average temperatures, the spring was cooler than normal, bringing just the right amount of rain needed. The weather conditions in June, July, and August were distinctly favourable to fully develop the aromatic precursors of white grape varieties. August was characterized by significant day-night temperature fluctuations, some greater than 19 C, also due to seasonal storms. The first harvested clusters of Sauvignon Blanc exhibit outstanding analytics, a potential alcohol of over 12%, and a very balanced acidity.
At the end of August, they started picking the initial lots of Cicinis Sauvignon, which usually give the wine crispness and minerality, followed by the other parcels of Sauvignon Blanc, and then Pinot Grigio. Attems is one of Friuli Venezia Giulia’s most historic producers, with a winemaking heritage dating back nearly a millennium. Count Douglas Attems, who led his family’s estate for the second half of the 20th Century, founded the important Consorzio dei Vini del Collio in 1964, helping the region achieve DOC recognition. In 2000, he sold the estate to Marchese Vittorio Frescobaldi, whom he met during their years as students at the University of Florence. Attems holdings consist of 104 acres of south-facing terraced slopes on the Collio hillsides, as well as plateaus in the Isonzo area.
