Two Sonoma-rooted brands come together to combat food insecurity
Healdsburg, CA — Tuesday April 13, 2021 — Historic Sonoma County sparkling wine producer, Piper Sonoma, has partnered with Sonoma-based Farm to Pantry, to provide financial support to help continue the efforts to bring otherwise discarded local produce to those facing food insecurity across Sonoma County.
Funds from this partnership will help rescue more than 10,000 pounds of produce (the equivalent to over 40,000 servings of fruits and vegetables), reducing food waste and also reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and it comes at a crucial time for the community, as one in three Sonoma County neighbors are facing food insecurity and the demand for food is up 235%* (Source: Redwood Empire Food Bank*).
Farm to Pantry Executive Director and celebrity Chef Duskie Estes is thrilled for the support this partnership brings:
“Piper Sonoma and Farm to Pantry share roots in Healdsburg, as well as a dedication to sustainable farming, the environment and food justice.”
She continued: “Piper Sonoma’s commitment to supporting local community is appreciated, and we look forward to working with them to help address food insecurity in our community.”
Farm to Pantry works to eliminate food waste and prevent viable produce from being plowed under while families are being turned away from food banks. The funds will be put towards additional staffing, harvest equipment, sanitation supplies and fuel for food delivery.
Farm to Pantry achieves their mission with the hands of over 350 volunteers on 250 properties and delivers to over 85 community partners. Current resources only help to face existing logistic and manpower issues to bridge that gap. Since the pandemic began, the amount of food salvaged and delivered each week has quadrupled, and sales from Piper Sonoma enthusiasts will help to support the Farm to Pantry growth and mission.
Over the coming months Piper Sonoma’s website will feature recipes and “how-to” videos courtesy of Farm to Pantry’s Executive Director and celebrity Chef Duskie Estes. The first recipe, Roasted Radishes with Green Goddess Dressing, paired with Piper Sonoma Blanc de Blancs will launch this spring. Recipes for summer, autumn, and winter will follow, and will be featured on Piper Sonoma’s website.
Piper Sonoma is one of the first and few sparkling houses in Northern California and was founded in 1980 in Sonoma County by Marquis d’Aulan, who tied the region back to the rich sparkling industry in Champagne. The Healdsburg winery is now helmed by winemaker Keith Hock, who makes iconic sparkling wines from fruit sourced in Sonoma County.
The wines are available for the partnership nationally at the suggested retail prices: Piper Sonoma Brut ($22), Piper Sonoma Brut Rosé ($22), Piper Sonoma Blanc de Blancs ($22), and the limited release Piper Sonoma Brut Reserve ($25). Piper Sonoma wines are represented nationally by Folio Fine Wine Partners. For more information, image or interview requests, please contact Kelly Conrad at kellynconrad3@gmail.com.
